About the Author

Fr. Raymund Chauhan sj was born on 13th September, 1955, in Ahmedabad. He studied English Literature in St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad from 1974-1977. Thereafter, in order to prepare himself for priesthood in the Catholic Church, he underwent a prolonged formation in the Society of Jesus. He receieved this formation in Ahmedabad, Pune, Delhi.

Languages and Music are his favourite subjects. In his own mother tongue Gujarati, Fr. Raymund composed many hymns. He also musically composed new melodies to the already existing hymns or
poems. What surprises is that he has composed many more hymns in both Gamit and Dangi Languages. The Gamits and the Dangis sing and dance these hymns.

Ever since 1988 Fr. Raymund Chauhan sj has been engaged in his varied apostolates and working intimately with and for the tribals of South Gujarat such as Vasavas, Chaudharis, Kokanas and Dangis.

There is a confluence of language, music and religion in his life as a Jesuit Priest.

He is a scholar in Gamit Language. It was he who wrote the Grammar of Gamit Language of the Gamit tribe of South Gujarat. He is known as the Gamit Scholar to the students, reserachers and scholars of tribal culture, the tribals themselves especially the Gamits.

On 26th of June, 2011, his first book on “ડાંગી  ભાષાનું  વ્યાકરણ” (Grammar of Dangi Language) was  released.

Thus being the son of the soil, a Jesuit Priest, and a  Catholic Missionary, Fr. Raymund Chauhan sj has written the grammars of two different tribal languages – Gamit and Dangi.

1 . ગામીત   વિધિ   અને   ગામીત  લગ્ન  Gito   ( Gamit Marriage Rite and Gamit
Marriage Songs )

This book contains, as it is self-explanatory, the Marriage Rite of the Gamit Tribe as practiced by them for centuries. It is a well thought-out system of marriage having each stage of marriage well
planned, spaced out and worked out with details, roles of the elders, the family members, the bride and the bride groom spelled out.

There is almost a volcanic irruption of marriage songs which are sung according to each stage of marriage. Full of gusto, zeal, the simple songs are full of life and message, along with fun, advice, the rites, the time, the welcome and farewell, the jest and dig etc.

All these songs, over 200 and so,  have been recorded into 7 audio cassettes – sung by the Gamit women themselves. This was published in 1994, from Unai, Jivan Jyot.
2       સૃષ્ટિ  ગાન સંગ્રહ   ( A Collection of the songs of Creation )

This book is published with a view to preserving, appreciating and spreading tribal culture of the Gamit Tribe, South Gujarat.

This book has 3 parts :

Part One : deals with prayers and rites  Common Catholic Prayers

       Prayers on the feast of Catholic Church
       Prayers on general events
       Prayers on Tribals feasts
       Way of the cross
       The birth rite – on the fifth day of the child-birth
       Baptism
       Marriage Rite
       Funeral and Creamation rite
       Post death rite

Part Two : deals with the experiement of Eucharist in Gamit Culture and Language

Part Three :    deals with the bhajans composed both word and tune, by
the tribals, priests etc.

This book was published in the year, April, 1995, from Unai.

3       ગામીત  ભાષાનું  વ્યાકરણ  (Grammar of Gamit Language)

The book explains the Gamit Language and grammar. It also has chapters
on theie Gamit Proverbs, riddles, idiomatic expressions, expressions
for various diseases, thematic and useful vocabulary.

This book was published in the year 1997, from Mandal, Catholic Church.

This book received “The best book award”, under grammar section, from
the Gaujarat Sahitya Academy on 09.01.1999, at Ahmedabad
4       ગામીત  દંતકથાઓ  (Gamit Myths)

There are altogether 20 myths narrated by elders of different
villages. I have edited them a bit. The     peculiar feature of this
book is that it is simultaneously   translated into Gujarati and
English languges. Thus it   is a tri-lingual publication. At the
moment the National Sahitya Academy, Delhi, brought out this book in
Gamit and Gujarati. It will bring out the English edition later. This
book was published in the year 2002.

5       ગીતાહા  જોરો  (A spring of songs – Psalms)
All 150 psalms have been translated into Gamit and set to Gamit
Singable and Danceable traditional tunes.
This book was published in the year 2000.

6       તપઋતુ   અને  પવિત્ર  અઠવાડિયા  (Lent and Holy Week) Published in the
year 2003. This book deals with the Lenten season and holy week
ceremonies in Gamit. With the passion song and exultet translated into
singable and danceable tune.

7       હોળીનો  તહેવાર  અને  હોળીના  ગીતો, ગામીત  જાતિના  વિશિષ્ઠ  સંદર્ભમાં
: ( The feast of Holi and the Songs of Holi in reference to Gamit
Tribe)
At the moment he is working on this book. It deals with the Gamit
feasts, Gamit religious world, the songs sung before and during the
feast of Holi. Of course this will be a biligual book.

SIMPLE PEOPLE -By Rev. Fr. Valentine de Souza SJ

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (A) - 3 July 2011

SIMPLE PEOPLE

Matthew 11, 25-30

Rev.Fr. Valentine de Souza SJ
José Antonio Pagola (Translated By Fr.Valentine de Souza SJ)

Jesus did not have a problem with simple people. The people easily empathized with him. Those simple folk who spent their days working to help their families survive, received with joy his message of a God who is a Father, concerned for all his children, above all, for the most forgotten.

The most vulnerable sought his blessing: with Jesus they felt closest to God. Many sick, influenced by his faith in a good God, regained their faith in the heavenly Father. Women sensed that God must love his sons and daughters, as Jesus said, with a mother's deeply felt love.

The way he spoke about God, the way he lived and the way he dealt with the poorest and the most needy people, they felt he proclaimed a God they needed. In Jesus they experienced the saving closeness of the Father.

The attitude of the "experts" was different. What filled the simple people with joy filled them with indignation. The teachers of the Law could not understand that Jesus would be so concerned about suffering and so little about the fulfillment of Sabbath obligations. The religious leaders of Jerusalem resented Jesus: the "Father" God of whom Jesus spoke was not Good News, but a threat to their religion.

For Jesus such a different reaction to his message was not to be taken lightly. The Father for him is the best news. So he gives thanks in the hearing of all: "I give thanks, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and the experts and have revealed them to the simple people. Yes, Father, this is what you thought best."

Even today simple people understand the Gospel better than anybody else. They have no problem empathizing with Jesus. It is easier to reveal the Father to them than to the "experts" in religion. When they hear Jesus spoken of, they trust him spontaneously.

Today practically everything practical and important is decided in the Church without involving the simple people and to their exclusion. It is difficult, however, that anything new or good for the future of Christianity will be accomplished without taking them into account.  It is the simple people who will lead us towards a more evangelical Church – not the theologians and not religious leaders.

We have to rediscover the evangelical potential that's hidden in the faithful. Many simple Christians desire and seek to live their attachment to Christ more in conformity with the Gospel, in a Church renewed by the Spirit of Jesus. They are demanding more of the Gospel and less doctrine from us. They are asking for essentials, not trivialities.

Spread the faith of simple people

TRINITY SUNDAY (A) – 19 June 2011

TRINITY SUNDAY (A) – 19 June 2011

THE CHRISTIAN BEFORE GOD

John 3, 16-18

José Antonio Pagola - translated By Rev. Fr. Valentine de Souza SJ (Vyara)

Rev. Fr. Valentine de Souza SJ
It is not always easy for us Christians to relate to the Mystery of God whom we know as the Trinity, in a concrete, lively manner. The religious crisis, however, calls upon us more than ever to foster a personal, healthy, gratifying relationship with him. Jesus, the Mystery of God made flesh in the Prophet of Galilee, is the best starting point to rekindle a simple faith.

How do we relate to the Father? Jesus teaches us two basic attitudes. Firstly, with total trust. The Father is good. He loves us unconditionally. Nothing matters to him more than our welfare. We can trust in him without fear, suspicion, calculation, or intrigue. To live is to trust in Love as the ultimate mystery beyond all reality.

Secondly, with unconditional docility. It is good to live mindful of the will of the Father, for he wants only a more dignified  life for all. There is no more right and healthy way to live. This is the secret motivating force of those who live with the mystery of reality prompted by faith in a God who is a Father.

How do we relate to the incarnate Son of God? First, follow Jesus: know him, believe in him, empathize with him, learn to live following his footsteps. See life as he saw it; treat people as he treated them; sow signs of goodness and creative freedom as he did; live by making life more humane. This is the way God lived when he became a man. There is no other way for a Christian to live life with passion.

Secondly, collaborate with the Project of God that Jesus began following the will of the Father. We cannot remain passive. God wants to see those who weep, laugh; those who hunger, he wants to see filled. We have to change things so that life becomes life for all. This Project which Jesus calls “the Kingdom of God”, is the framework, the orientation and the horizon placed before us coming from the ultimate mystery of God to make life more compassionate.

How do we live animated by the Holy Spirit? Firstly, live animated by the love which courses through the life span of Jesus. What is important is to live with love, inspired by love. Nothing is more important. Love is the power that gives meaning, truth, and hope to our existence. It is love that saves us from so many shameful deeds, errors, and miseries.

Finally, those who live “anointed by the Spirit of God”, feel sent in a special way to announce the Good News to the poor. Their lives become a liberating force for those in captivity, a light for those in darkness, a gift for those in misery.

Rekindle the Christian Faith in God

PENTECOST A - 12 June 2011

PENTECOST  A  -  12 June 2011
INVOCATION
John 20, 19-23
José Antonio Pagola translated by Rev.Fr. Valentine de Souza SJ

Rev.Fr.Vally de Souza SJ
According to John, it is the Spirit that makes Jesus present in the Christian community. He reminds us of his message, makes us walk in his truth, and has us live his command of love. This is the Spirit we call upon at the Feast of Pentecost.

Come Holy Spirit and teach us to call upon God with that precious name of “Father” Jesus taught us. If we do not feel his loving presence in our midst, we will be orphaned. Remind us that Jesus alone is the way that leads us to him; that only his life committed to the lowliest reveals to us his true face. Without Jesus we would never comprehend his thirst for peace, justice, and dignity for all his children.
Come Holy Spirit and have us walk in the truth of Jesus. Without your light and inspiration, we will forget time and again his Project of the Kingdom of God. We will live without passion and without hope. We will not know why we follow him or for what. We will not know what we should live or suffer for. And the Kingdom will continue to look for collaborators.

Come Holy Spirit and teach us to proclaim the Good News of Jesus. Let us not load heavy burdens on anyone. Let us not pronounce on problems that do not affect us or condemn those who, above all, need acceptance and understanding. Let us never break a bruised reed or snuff out a smoldering wick.

Come Holy Spirit and instill in us the religious experience of Jesus. Let us not waste our lives in trivial pursuits neglecting justice, mercy, and faith. Let nothing and no one distract us from following him as our only Lord. Let no doctrine, practice, or devotion draw us away from his Gospel.

Come Holy Spirit and increase our faith so that we experience the power of Jesus in the very midst of our weakness. Teach us to nourish our lives not from human traditions or empty words, but from the interior knowledge of his Person. Let us always be led by his bold and creative Spirit, and not by our instinct for security.
Come Holy Spirit and transform our hearts; convert us to Jesus. If each of us does not change, nothing will change in the Church. If we all remain captives of inertia, nothing new, nothing good will be born among his followers. If we do not allow ourselves to be drawn by his creativity, his movement will remain at a standstill.
Come Holy Spirit and keep us from the risk of forgetting Jesus. Trapped by our fears and uncertainties, we will not be able to hear his voice nor recognize his inspiration. Deepen our commitment, for if we lose our contact with him, anxiety and insecurity will stifle our growth.

Come Holy Spirit, on each of us and on your Church

ASCENSION OF THE LORD A – 5 June 2011

ASCENSION OF THE LORD A – 5 June 2011

THE SCHOOL OF JESUS

Matthew 28, 16-20
José Antonio Pagola. Translated By Rev. Fr. Valentine SJ

Rev. Fr. Valentine de Souza SJ
The situation in which our Christian communities find themselves today is not at all easy.  Many questions keep troubling the hearts of those of us who follow Jesus: how can we strengthen our faith in these times of religious crisis? What’s really important at these times? What must we do in the communities of Jesus? To what purpose must we direct our efforts?

Matthew concludes his gospel narrative with a scene of exceptional importance. Jesus gathers his disciples for the last time to entrust his mission to them. These will be the last words they will hear him speak, the ones that will direct their work and sustain their faith all through the centuries.

Following the directions of the women, the disciples meet in Galilee. It was there they had begun their friendship with Jesus. There, too, they had committed themselves to follow him and work for the project of the Kingdom of God. Now they’ve met without knowing what to expect. Will they meet Jesus again after his execution?

The meeting with the Risen One isn’t easy. On seeing him approach, the disciples “prostrate themselves” before him; they realize there’s something new about Jesus; they want to believe, but “some hesitate”. The group moves between trust and sadness. They worship him but are not free from doubts and insecurity. Christians today could empathize with them. It happens to us too.

What’s so wonderful is that Jesus does not reproach them for anything. He knows them from the day he invited them to follow him. Their faith is still small, but in spite of their doubts and hesitation, he trusts them. With this small and fragile faith they will take his message to the whole world. Thus they will be able to accept and understand those who through the centuries will have a faith that wavers. Jesus will sustain them all.

The primary task entrusted to them is clear: “to make disciples” of his in every nation. He does not send them, properly speaking, to teach doctrine, but to work to ensure that there will be men and women who will be disciples of Jesus in the world, followers who will learn to live like him, accept him as a Teacher, and never stop learning to be free and just, working together to build a more humane world.

Matthew sees the Christian community as a “school of Jesus”. We may be many or few. Among us there will be convinced believers and those who doubt. It will be increasingly difficult to look after all as we would like to. The important thing is that in our communities we learn to live the way Jesus lived. He is our only Master. The rest of us are all brothers and sisters who help and encourage each other to become his disciples.

We are not orphaned. Jesus is alive in our midst
