"Glory Of Gujarat" Award Winner_ Sr. Maria Maya_Nadiad

The big dreamer of Matruchhaya Orphanage, Nadiad :

Sr.Maria Maya Gonzalez

Please click the video

Biography Of  Sr.Maria Maya Gonzalez

Matruchhaya Orphanage is situated in the learned city of Nadiad. Matruchhaya mainly caters to the needs of the destitute, poor, abandoned, lost and orphan children in Gujarat. We provide them with shelter, education and rehabilitation. The child that enters into this home receives all the love, care, affection and above all personal attention as like any ordinary child in the society. Sr.Maria Maya was the one who dreamt of Matruchhaya.Originally she is from Spain but she has served in the land of Gujarat from last 48 years, without even bothering for her growing age and her ill health.
Sr.Maria
Sr.Maria was born on 15th November 1935 in Cartegana (Sewiliya) of South Spain. Her father was late Mr.Joesph Maya and her mother was late Mrs.Thomasa Gonzalez. She is the third child of this pious and devout couple. She completed her education from her native place and she acquired the degree of Nursing from the Medical college of Barcelona, Spain. The virtues of love and compassion along with religiosity were in her from the birth. At the age of 19 she offered her life to the person of Jesus to serve the humanity. It was the year 1954 when she decided to become religious thus she joined the congregation of “Sisters of Charity of St.Anne’ with the permission of her parents.

Up to 1964 she served her people in Spain and then she marched forwarded to serve the people of India, in the year 1964 she left for India.inspite of different culture and language she joyfully began her mission in Gujarat, India. She served in the hospital of Our Lady of Pillar Baroda, Kalol and Nadiad. In beginning she had to face lot of difficulties since she did not know the language. But this language barrier did not discourage her. Now she is well worse with Gujarati and English.

In the year 1964 to 1966 she began her virgin mission in Nadiad in one small room the place where St.Anne school stands now. It was known as Our Lady of Pillar Dispensary. During this time she used go to the villages since there was no transport facility she used to walk miles to reach to those villages.

1966 she got transfer to Baroda. It was just the beginning of the mission in Baroda. Sisters used to stay in rented house. Sr.Maria looked after the construction work of the hospital with minute details. Gradually the mission flourished and now we have huge hospital of Our Lady of Pillar with latest equipments.
In the 1969 Sr.Maria was transferred to the place called Mokhsan situated near Kadi – Kalol. She was looking after the sick and helping the poor people of near by villages. During the day when the people go for labour work Sr.Maria was looking after their children and taking care of them. At that time there were very few hospitals so, many pregnant women used to come to her to take the guidance and necessary help. She was even conducting the delivery. She had become very dear to the people of that area.

1974 she was again transferred to Nadiad at Our Lady of Pillar Hospital. It so happened that when she got transfer from Mokhasan to Nadiad there was an orphan boy who was only 4 years old so she brought him with her. At that time there was no orphanage so she sent him to the boarding school for his education but when he came for holidays Sr.Maria was in dilemma as to where to keep this boy? Who will look after this boy? But soon a thought crossed her mind to place this child in a pious family of Mr.Simon who was working with sisters and staying in the campus. The family took good care of him and sr.maria helped him financially and when he grew up Sr.Maria found a suitable partner for him and got him married. At present he has two kids and living joyful life with his family.

She began to serve the most poorest and needy of the society. During this time Sr. Maria Maya was working in the Dispensary of Our Lady of Pillar and helping to run the maternity ward. One morning as she opened the door of the dispensary and lo and behold… She found a new born baby lying on the door. Someone had abandoned the child. She picked up the child and cradled the baby. The caring and nursing began and she got an instant inspiration to care for such abandoned babies. Since then she never turned back and looked. So from 5th November 1980 Matruchhaya came to existence today it has become a giant tree giving shelter to many children.

When Matruchhaya came into existence there were around 10 to 15 children. Sr.Maria also gave shelter to the children of leprosy patient of Bhavnagar. She provided them with education and rehabilitated their families because of her effort many children were saved from the deadly disease of Leprosy at that time. Whenever she saw a child in need of care and protection she gave her total self to reach them out.

Sr.Maria is a person filled with love and compassion therefore every child in Matruchhaya has experienced her motherly love, care and affection therefore children call her “Mummy Maria”. Sr.Maria Maya has rehabilitated many children back to their families and many have been adopted not only this but also she has helped many widows, destitute and poor economically.

Sr.Maria has touched many hearts and many lives which can not be counted. Let me jot down one of the heart touching experience: Before ten years she found a baby girl weighing only 650 gm. We admitted her to best pediatric hospital but the doctors gave no hope for her survival while returning back home Sr.Maria took this child in the hand and blew her breath in to her mouth and the child got life. The doctors stated that it was indeed a miracle. Now the child is 10 years old and being adopted by a family.

There is also another story which will touch your heart: A real story of Ravi. One fine day we got call from a government officer that they have found a new born baby boy from the dustbin at Godhra village which is 100 km away from Nadiad. His look was so scaring thus no institution was ready to admit him. As soon as she got the call she rushed to bring and save the child. Having brought him to Matruchhaya she named him Ravi. His whole face was disfigured and frightening so even the care takers were afraid of taking care of him so Sr.Maria used to keep him in her room and taking good care of him, witnessing these care takers also gained courage to do the same. Today Ravi is with us. We have tried all the possible way out for his treatment.

Sr.Maria has rehabilitated many children by searching their families and giving them into adoption.

In the year 1988 Sr.Maria gave an application to social Defense Department in order to acquire the recognition for the orphanage. We got the recognition in the year 1996 with the condition that we would not get any grant from government and Sr.Maria accepted it happily. During this period Social Justice & empowerment department had also given us the recognition for in country adoption of children. It looked like even God was pleased with Sr.Maria’s untiring effort so sooner we got the recognition for Inter country adoption in the year 2003 from Government of India, Women & Child development.

Orphanage admits surrendered children of unwed mothers, Orphan and destitute through Child Welfare Committee. All the Children are given the best possible medical treatment by child specialist. Since most of the children are born premature due to induced labor by the unwed mother to avoid carrying the pregnancy full time, they are received seriously ill having weight 1 kg to 1 ½ kg only. There is facility of incubators to keep such children. They are well nursed with an emotional bond in a human bond and in a healthy atmosphere by the staff kept for this purpose.

The Institution performs marriages of major girls and boys. During 10 years we have around 10 inmates got married and well settled. That day is the auspicious occasion for us. On this day elite of the society is invited to attend the function. We celebrate all the festivals like Diwali, Christmas, Janmashtmi, Navratri etc. We celebrate the children’s day every year very solemnly. We have get together of all the adoptive parents. We celebrate every year “Adoption awareness week”. We have picnic of the children every year. 250 children are given into In country adoption & 23 to NRI couples and 25 to the foreigners. More than 125 children have been re-united back to their families.

Sr.Maria’s life is an inspiration. At the age of 64 suddenly she fell sick and went into coma for three long days. I think God had still better plan for her so she returned back from coma and her health was enhanced. She started working again. It looked like God was testing her so again at the age 70 she had to under go major oppression of Spine twice. But she did not lose courage and came out of it successfully.

Now she is 77 years old in spite of her fading health and growing age she doesn’t sit idle but she has started tailoring classes for the poor and widow and needy women in order to help them economically and socially. Having completed their tailoring classes she provides them with the credential and tailoring appliance. Apart from all this she has special love and fondness for the birds and animals that’s the reason she gives them personal attention. At the sunset of her life she is vigorous to serve the downtrodden of the society.

She has offered her whole life in the service of humankind. It is indeed admirable. Hats’s off to you and accept our grand salute for being the channel of love and compassion to those who came to your life.

From the Letter Of Superior General, Adolfo Nicholas, S.J.Society Of Jesus.

It is a cause of great joy for me to be able to greet you on the occasion of your Golden Jubilee as a Jesuit.I join you in thanking God for these past fifty years – and what a wonderful gift they have been! We must also be grateful for this vocation of yours, and thankful too, to the many people who have made this day possible: your parents, teachers, friends and fellow Jesuits.

Inspired by the missionaries zeal of St. Francis Xavier you decided to join the Jesuits in Gujarat. During
your formation years you took interest in painting, drawing and music. This eventually led you to the communication ministry as your way of proclaiming the kingdom.

“What we heard, seen and touched, we proclaim to you” has been the spirit behind your dedication to
the ministry of communication. In every project that you undertook, there was something to be discovered and to be created. The communication centre collaborated with Darpana Academy in staging “Snehna Shatdal”, a dance-drama based on the life of Christ which was staged in various important cities of Gujarat and also later televised on national TV. You devoted valuable time to training a large number of Catechist, Jesuit Scholastics, Brothers and Sisters of various religious Congregation in communication skills and offered this expertise even to institutions outside Gujarat.

You are one of the Founding Fathers of the communication ministry in Gujarat which you started in Vadodara and continue to serve at Ahmedabad. At present your audio-visual communication activities are made available through the well-known centre Gurjarvani. Keeping pace with the electronic age, you have initiated many new services from Gurjarvani.

Gurjarvani’s reputation for hospitality and availability to serve the communication ministry owes much
to your welcoming attitude and your readiness to respond to requests from various individual and groups. Perceived as a man of spiritual depth, many seek spiritual direction from you.

I thank you, dear Father Devasia, on behalf of the Society, for the many and important ways in which you
have furthered the Society’s mission during these fifty years. I join my prayers with those of Jesuits throughout the world in asking the Lord’s particular favour for you during this year of jubilee, and, with your family and friends, thank God for the many blessing that have filled both your life and theirs. I commend the whole Society and myself to your own Masses and prayers.

Devotedly yours
Adolfo Nicholas, S.J.
Superior General

Special thanks to Rev. Fr. Devasia Muthuplackal S.J. and Gurjarvani Community.

Gujarat Vidya Deep Regional Seminary (GVD)
A Seminary for Contextual and relevant theological formation for Mission

GVD has completed fourteen years of its service to the Church in Gujarat this year. It was established in 1998 at Ahmedabad which was later shifted to its present location in Sevasi in 2004. It is a joint venture of the four dioceses and the male religious congregations to train ministers of the Gospel in Gujarat. So far the training was aimed at preparing candidates for priesthood.
Now from this year. GVD will be offering a one year certificate course for religious sisters. Planning for introducing a theology course for laity is also in progress and the response of laity has been very positive.
Theological formation at GVD is aimed at helping the students to gain a thorough knowledge of Scripture and the living tradition and magisterium (official teaching) of the Church and a contextual grasp of the faith of the Church and its mission to the contemporary world.
It also aims to develop a relevant methodology to reflect theologically on the present emerging and evolving contexts. Care is taken to introduce the students to the importance of a deeper knowledge of the language, culture and religious realities of the State.

While providing adequate facilities to interiorize their theological knowledge and insights gained through the study of the texts (Scripture-tradition-magisterium) and contexts (culture, language, socio-political-religious realities) in their personal life, they are also being trained to effectively communicate this knowledge and experience in their future field of pastoral ministries and mission-evangelization.

The above vision is being realized to some extent at GVD by focusing mainly on the following areas of integral formation:
i.               Personal Formation which includes spiritual, emotional, social, relational, dialogical dimensions, as well as the cultivation of the qualities of creativity, apostolic boldness and commitment with personal conviction.
ii.              Academic Formation in the field of theological reflection by equipping the students to respond to the contemporary contextual challenges creatively. This will include the study of biblical theology, systematic theology, moral theology, pastoral theology, the study of the living tradition and magisterium of the Church.
iii.            Contextual Formation through socio-cultural analysis and exposure programmes to the lived conditions of Christian communities and the poor. This approach demands the tools of human and social sciences for socio-cultural-political analysis to interpret reality through the eyes of the poor and the marginalized Christians and the oppressed. This process should lead to a process of theological reflection in context.

It is true that generally we gain knowledge of the people through books or through objective, intellectual knowledge which is already available as text.  Beyond this informative knowledge, there is another dimension to knowledge which is affective knowledge with love and feeling and an emotional content. Affective knowledge adds another dimension to textual and intellectual knowledge which helps us to bridge the gap between text and context.  It also helps the students to be in solidarity and to have a sense of belonging to the Christian community and feel at home with them. They feel accepted and loved by the communities to which they are sent. They learn to listen to the people and feel with them and thus gain not only informative knowledge but also experiential knowledge. Thus, those who come as outsiders gradually become insiders by undergoing a conversion to the people by learning their language and culture which ultimately should result in personal transformation.

I hope that the contextual formation received at GVD may lead the young ministers to dedicate themselves enthusiastically to the service of the faith community of the local Church as well as the civil society through the promotion of social justice, human rights, dialogue with world religions and ideologies to promote harmony and peace, along with the commitment to protect the health and wholeness of the earth.

PARLIAMENT MARCH AND DHARNA

 Mr.Ratilal Jadav

PARLIAMENT MARCH AND DHARNA

Jantar Mantar , New Delhi, Wednesday, 1 August 2012, from 10 am to 5 pm
Organised by : National Council of Dalit Christians (NCDC) In association with Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) and National Council of Churches in India (NCCI)

The Dalit Christian / Dalit Muslim struggle for Scheduled Caste status has gained considerable momentum now. Over the last six years, there has been relentless struggle for this cause under the leadership of NCDC with the support of CBCI and NCCI. There are many suits pending in the apex court concerned with this matter. The Union government is delaying the justice and jurisprudence of apex court by deliberately denying filing its response on the suits and thereby deliberately avoiding the hearing of the suits on its merit. Recently one of the member organisations of NCDC has also moved another petition in the apex court to expedite the existing suits. Justice Renganatha Misra Commission has strongly recommended the deletion of para 3 of Constitution (Scheduled Caste) Order 1950. Based on the Misra Commission recommendations, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and the National Commission for Minorities have filed their reply in the apex court. Still the Congress led UPA government is unjustly and blatantly deviating from its commitment to file reply in the court and to implement the Report.

All the political parties in India support our cause, except Congress Party and BJP. The first UPA led by Congress has accepted and committed to resolve the Dalit Christian issue in its manifesto, but favourably ignored it and denied justice to us in their tenure. The Second UPA has completely forgotten and neglected us.

In a democracy like India, continuous struggle of the affected party is important in resolving their crisis. Therefore, we propose to raise this issue strongly during monsoon session of Parliament within and outside the Parliament. Discussions have been made with Members of Parliament and political parties and commitments secured from them to raise the issue strongly in the Parliament. So it is the responsibility of the Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims to raise our voice in big number outside the Parliament and take our issue strongly to the civil society to create substantial pressure on the Government. We Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims have to use this opportunity to expose the delay tactic of the Union Government and demand our constitutional rights.

We demand

· That the Government furnish reply in the apex court on the suits pending

· That the Government implement the recommendation of Misra Commission immediately.

· That the Scheduled Caste status be religion-neutral

· That the religious ban on the Muslims and Christians of Scheduled Caste origin on the enjoyment of Scheduled Caste (SC) rights be lifted with affirmative action.

Let us join together to raise our voice strongly on 1st August 2012 in New Delhi.

Let us also join the protests in all the States on 10th August 2012 “Black Day” the day of promulgation of the unjust and anti-secular Presidential Order of 1950.

TRINITY SUNDAY (B) 3 June 2012

Rev. Fr. Valantine de Souza SJ
 TRINITY SUNDAY (B) 3 June 2012
 Matthew 28, 16-20
 José Antonio Pagola

At the heart of the Christian faith in a triune God there is an essential affirmation. God is not an obscure, unreachable God, selfishly locked up within himself. God is love and only love. We Christians believe that in the ultimate mystery of reality there is nothing except love, giving meaning and consistency to everything.

Jesus has not written any treatise on God. We never find him explaining any doctrine about him to the peasants of Galilee. For Jesus, God is not a concept, a beautiful theory, or a sublime definition. God is humanity’s best friend.

Researchers do not doubt a fact the Gospels make clear. The people who listened to Jesus speak of God and saw him act in his name, experienced God as Good News. They find what Jesus says about God as something new and wonderful. The experience he communicates seems to be the best news they can hear about God. Why?

The first truth they grasp is that God is the God of all, not merely of those who feel worthy to stand before him in the temple. God is not limited to a holy place. He does not belong to a religion. He is not the property of pious folk who make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. As Jesus said, “he makes his sun to rise on the good and the evil.” He does not exclude anyone or discriminate against people. Jesus encourages all to trust in him:”When you pray, say: Father!”

With Jesus they will discover that God is not exclusively the God of those who come to him full of merits. He listens preferably to those who ask for compassion from him because they believe themselves to be hopelessly lost. Jesus tells us that God is always looking out for the lost. It’s the reason he feels so close to sinners. So he assures them: “I have come to seek and save those who are lost.”

They also realize that God is not the God only of the wise and learned. Jesus thanks the Father because it pleased him to reveal to little children what remains hidden to the knowledgeable. God has fewer problems making himself known to simple people than to the scholarly who believe they know it all.

In the name of God, Jesus alleviated the suffering of the sick, freed those possessed by evil spirits, rescued lepers from being marginalized and offered forgiveness to sinners and prostitutes. This commitment of Jesus to the sick, poor and ostracized convinced them that Jesus considered God the best friend of the human being. Yes, he seeks only our good, and opposes only what does us harm. The followers of Jesus never doubted this truth: the God incarnate and revealed in Jesus is Love and nothing but Love for all.

Tell all the world: God is our best friend
