Easter Sunday- Meeting the Risen Lord

Easter Sunday

Meeting the Risen Lord
John 20, 1-9

According to the account of John, Mary of Magdala is the first to go to the sepulcher while it is still dark, and disconsolate, she finds it empty. She is missing Jesus, the Teacher who had understood and healed her; the Prophet she had followed faithfully to the end. Whom will she now follow? This is how she complains to the disciples: “They have taken the Lord from the grave and we do not know where they have laid him?”

These words of Mary could express the experience of not a few Christians today: what have we done to the Risen Jesus? Who has taken him away? Where have we put him? The Lord in whom we believe, is he a Christ full of life or a Christ whose memory is slowly fading in our hearts?

It is wrong to seek” proofs” to believe more firmly. It is not enough to have recourse to the teaching authority of the Church. It’s useless to study lengthy explanations of theologians. To encounter the Risen Lord, we must above all look deeply into our hearts. If we do not find him there within us, we will not find him anywhere else.

A little later, John describes Mary hurrying here and there in search of information. And, when she sees Jesus, blinded by sorrow and tears, she does not succeed in recognizing him. She thinks he is the gardener. Jesus asks her just one question: “Woman, why do you weep? Whom are you looking for?”

Perhaps we too ought to ask ourselves something similar? Why is our faith sometimes such a sad one? What is the real reason for the lack of joy among us? What is it we Christians today are looking for? What do we long for? Are we looking for a Jesus we need to experience full of life in our communities?

According to the story, Jesus is speaking to Mary, but she does not know that it is Jesus she is speaking to. It is then that Jesus calls her by her name, with the same tenderness in his voice he had for her in his journeys through Galilee: “Maria!” Mary swings around quickly: “Rabboni, Master!”

Mary encounters the Risen One when she feels personally called by him. It’s true. Jesus shows himself to us full of life when we feel called by our own name, and we hear the call he makes to each of us. It is then that our faith grows.

We will not revive our faith in the Risen Christ by fostering it from the outside. We will not encounter him if we do not seek a living contact with his person. Probably, it is the love of Jesus we come to know through the Gospels and seek personally in the depths of our hearts, that can best lead us to an encounter with the Risen Lord.

Open paths to faith in the Risen Lord

Holy Priesthood - called by God

Please click on video

This sacrament is also sent from God. It was established by Christ with the calling of His disciples, giving them the authority to loose and bind the sins of the people, and sending the Holy Spirit upon them on the day of Pentecost. The Apostles were the only ones to receive the priesthood. The Holy Spirit, which descended "as tongues of fire," did so only upon the Apostles on the day of Pentecost.

The Apostles have since then given the authority of the priesthood to their successors, as can be shown in many passages in Holy Scripture. Let me refer to some here: The Apostles "prayed and laid their hands upon them (Acts 6:6;13:3). St. Paul writes to Bishop Timothy, "Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you"(1 Timothy 4:14). To the clergy at Ephesus, St. Paul writes, "Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God" (Acts 20:28).

All these prove that the priesthood is God-sent and an apostolic practice.

The priesthood has three ranks, namely: the diaconate, the presbyterate or priesthood, and the episcopate or hierarchs. These are the three ranks of the priesthood; all other names are mere titles and do not affect the rank.

Man has every right to desire the priesthood, but he cannot take it by himself. St. Paul tells us this very clearly when he says that "one does not take the honour (the priesthood) himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was" (Hebrews 5:4). How is one called by God? First he receives an inner call. He loves the priesthood, and wants to become a cleric. Secondly, he has the call from God which reveals itself through the call to priesthood that comes from the priest of the community or from the bishop. The priesthood cannot be taken. It is given. It is given freely. Priesthood by bribery is not priesthood, but simony, which is a great sin. Those who pay for and sell the priesthood are condemned and unworthy of the priesthood.

The sacrament of ordination is celebrated for all three ranks during the Divine Liturgy. It can be celebrated only by a bishop. As a matter of fact, for the ordination of a bishop three celebrating bishops are required. It is celebrated by the laying on of hands and the invocation of the Holy Spirit.

The Priesthood is celebrated and is active here on earth. It has, however, a divine origin and works upon divine things. In essence, there is only one archpriest, Christ. The priesthood of Christ is, as it were, made present by all clergy, and especially by the bishop. The deacon and priest derive their priesthood from the bishop, just as the bishop derives his from Christ.

Priesthood does not exist when there is no canonical apostolic succession. Every priesthood that does not draw its source from the Apostles, and as a result from Christ, is not a true and genuine priesthood, but rather counterfeit. It is a false priesthood. It does not have grace and cannot give grace. It cannot sanctify and save. It is a pity and crime. False priests blaspheme the Holy Spirit and condemn their own selves and bring the naive to damnation.

Through ordination the bishop receives the offices of Christ: prophetic, royal, and priestly. With the prophetic office he teaches and correctly so the word of truth. With the royal office he administers and governs the Church. With the priestly office he celebrates the mysteries, sanctifies, and guides the faithful towards salvation.

Christ, great Archpriest, sacrifice and sacrificer, only Messiah, true and only benefactor of man, we acknowledge that without the sacrament of the Priesthood, which celebrates and completes all the other sacraments, our salvation would not be possible. We thank You for this great gift of Yours. We thank You in the knowledge of our sins, with humility, and with true repentance. We Your clergy especially thank You, knowing our unworthiness. We ask You to open our souls and hearts to accept Your grace, to respect the priesthood, to respect the clergy, and to assist them in their salvific work. Do not withhold our purification. Lead us to our salvation. Your will be done. Glory be to Your Name, now and forever.

1.2 billion Roman Catholics have first Latin American and first Jesuit Pope

Jorge Mario Bergoglio New Pope Francis

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected, becoming the first non-European pontiff in nearly 1,300 years.

Pope Francis, 76, appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica just over an hour after white smoke poured from a chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel to signal 115 cardinal electors had chosen him to lead the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics.

"Pray for me," the new pontiff, dressed in the white robes of a pope for the first time, urged the crowd, smiling warmly.

The choice of Bergoglio, who is the first Latin American and first Jesuit pope, was announced by French cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran with the Latin words "Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum. Habemus Papam" ("I announce to you a great joy. We have a pope.")

Francis has became the 266th pontiff in the Church's 2,000-year history at a time of great crisis, with the church under fire over a child sex abuse scandal and torn by infighting in the Vatican bureaucracy.

Jubilant Argentines poured into churches, some crying and praying, after the announcement at the Vatican. "This is a blessing for Argentina," one woman shouted on a Buenos Aires street.

"I hope he changes all the luxury that exists in the Vatican, that he steers the church in a more humble direction, something closer to the gospel," said Jorge Andres Lobato, a 73-year-old retired state prosecutor.

JESUIT ORDER

Although a conservative, Francis is seen as a reformer and was not among the small group of frontrunners identified before the election. The Jesuit order to which he belongs was founded in the 16th century to serve the pope. It is best known for its work in education and the intellectual prowess of its members.

Bergoglio is known as a humble man who leads an austere and sober life without ostentation, travelling by public transport and living in a small apartment outside Buenos Aires.

He is a moderate who is willing to challenge powerful interests and is deeply concerned about the social inequalities in Argentina and elsewhere in Latin America. He has had a sometimes difficult relationship with President Cristina Fernandez and her late husband and predecessor Nestor Kirchner.

Francis has spoken out strongly against gay marriage, denouncing it in 2010 as "an attempt to destroy God's plan".

He was born into a middle-class family of seven, his father an Italian immigrant railway worker and his mother a housewife.

Replacing Pope Benedict, who resigned last month, he overturned one of the main assumptions before the election, that the new pope would be relatively young.

Bergoglio is the oldest of most of the possible candidates and was barely mentioned in feverish speculation about the top contenders before the conclave.

He is the first non-European pope since Syrian-born Gregory III in the eighth century, and the third successive non-Italian pontiff.

The Vatican said his inaugural mass would be held on March 19.

U.S. President Barack Obama said the election of Francis "speaks to the strength and vitality of a region that is increasingly shaping our world."

"PRAY FOR BENEDICT"

In brief remarks from the balcony of St. Peter's, Francis called on the faithful to pray for Benedict and said the Church was setting off on a "journey of fraternity, of love, of trust."

It seemed the cardinal electors "went to the end of the world" to find him, he said.

The Vatican said Francis would visit Benedict soon at his temporary home in the summer papal residence outside Rome.

Thousands of people sheltering from heavy rain under a sea of umbrellas had occupied the square all day to await the decision and the crowd swelled as soon as the white smoke emerged.

They cheered wildly and raced towards the basilica as the smoke billowed from a narrow makeshift chimney and St Peter's bells rang.

The tens of thousands in the square cheered even more loudly when Francis appeared, the first pontiff to take that name. "Viva il Papa (pope)," they chanted.

The election was enthusiastically welcomed in Latin America. "I am happy because another European pope would be like eating the same bread every day," said Mexico City cab driver Martin Rodriguez.

"We're happy because we have a new pope and because the choice of a Latin American shows that the Church is opening, is now focused on the entire Church. It's not just a church only focused on Europe," said Leonardo Steiner, general secretary of the national conference of Brazilian bishops.

Frontrunners at the conclave had included Brazilian Odilo Scherer, and Italy's Angelo Scola, who would have returned the papacy to traditional Italian hands after 35 years of the German Benedict XVI and Polish John Paul II.

The decision by cardinal electors sequestered in a secret conclave in the Sistine Chapel came sooner than many experts expected because there were several frontrunners before the vote to replace Pope Benedict.

The cardinals faced a thorny task in finding a leader capable of overcoming crises caused by priestly child abuse and a leak of secret papal documents that uncovered corruption and rivalry inside the Church government or Curia.

Francis will head a Church also shaken by rivalry from other churches, the advance of secularism, especially in its European heartland, and allegations of scandal at the Vatican bank.

The series of crises is thought to have contributed to Benedict's decision to become the first pontiff in 600 years to abdicate.

RIVAL TO RATZINGER IN 2005

Bergoglio was a moderate rival candidate at the 2005 conclave to the conservative Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who went on to become Benedict.

Italian media say he impressed cardinals in pre-conclave meetings where they discussed the Church's problems.

Reserved and humble, Francis does not fit the profile of an active preacher that many cardinals had previously said they were seeking. He studied chemistry before joining the priesthood nearly a decade after losing a lung to respiratory illness.

"He's very humble, I heard that in Buenos Aires he used to take public transport, have an apartment and cook for himself. The fact that he chose the name Francis means a lot. It means we will have a humble, simple pope close to the poor people. But it was a big surprise," said Jules Charette, 54, a Canadian lawyer in St. Peter's Square.

Bands from the Italian armed forces and the Vatican's own Swiss guard army paraded in front of the basilica before the new pope appeared.

The secret conclave began on Tuesday night with a first ballot and four ballots were held on Wednesday. Francis obtained the required two thirds majority in the fifth ballot.

Following a split ballot when they were first shut away amid the chapel's Renaissance splendour on Tuesday evening, the cardinal electors held a first full day of deliberations on Wednesday. Black smoke rose after the morning session to signal no decision.

The previous four popes were all elected within two or three days.

Seven ballots have been required on average over the last nine conclaves. Benedict was clear frontrunner in 2005 and elected after only four ballots.

In preparatory meetings before the conclave, the cardinals seemed divided between those who believe the new pontiff must be a strong manager to get the dysfunctional bureaucracy under control and others who are looking more for a proven pastoral figure to revitalise their faith across the globe.

Apart from Brazil's Scherer and Italy's Scola, a host of other candidates from numerous nations had also been mentioned as potential popes - including U.S. cardinals Timothy Dolan and Sean O'Malley, Canada's Marc Ouellet and Argentina's Leonardo Sandri.

But the frontrunners list never mentioned Bergoglio.

A man who cooks for himself, takes public transport rather than using cars and who is a simple pastor. This is the portrait of Pope Francis I painted by a fellow Jesuit Fr. Federico Lombardi, Holy See Press Office Director, in the immediate aftermath of the announcement that “Padre Jorge” - as he was known in Buenos Aires among his faithful - had been elected Pope.
In an impromptu Press Briefing, Fr. Lombardi noted that this first Jesuit Pope, in true Ignatian Spirit is a first of all, a servant of the Church. Moreover he said, Jesuits “have an international vision, to serve wherever they are needed”. He also admitted his personal shock to have a Jesuit Pope: “Jesuits think of themselves servants, not authorities in the church”.
One of Pope Francis’ first acts was to phone Benedict XVI, Pope emeritus.
Fr. Lombardi confirmed that the Mass for the inauguration of the Petrine Ministry will be held March 19TH , the feast of St. Joseph, at 09:30 Rome time.
He also confirmed that the Mass for the closure of Conclave will be at 17:00 Thursday in the Sistine Chapel. On Friday, at 11 a.m., there will be an audience with the College of Cardinals in the Clementine Hall. That on Saturday 11 a.m. Pope Francis I will have audience with all journalists and media covering conclave- an announcement greeted with a round of applause in the briefing hall. And finally on Sunday Pope Francis will recite Angelus at noon.
Thursday, Pope Francis will make a private visit to a sanctuary of Our Lady on Thursday March 14th, but details will be released only when this visit is over.

"Habemus Papam" - "We have a pope" - New Pope elected at the Vatican

White smoke: New Pope elected at the Vatican

Vatican City: The Catholic church has chosen a new pope.

White smoke is billowing from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, meaning 115 cardinals in a papal conclave have elected a new leader for the world's 1.2 billion Catholics. (Buzz on Twitter)

The new pope is expected to appear on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica within an hour, after a church official announces "Habemus Papam" - "We have a pope" - and gives the name of the new pontiff in Latin.

SOURCE:  NDTV

The world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics have a new spiritual leader.

As afternoon turned to evening in Vatican City on Wednesday, a little after 7 p.m. local time, white smoke rose from a chimney above the Sistine Chapel and bells rang through St. Peter's Square — the traditional signals that the church's cardinals have chosen a new pope.

According to Vatican Radio, which is streaming its coverage on YouTube, the identity of the new pope — who will appear on a balcony above St. Peter's Square — should be known within an hour or so. At this moment, Vatican Radio says, he's likely changing from the vestments he's worn as a cardinal into those made for a pope alone.

International Women's Day 2013 - Hangati- Mandal-Vyara

‘Sahkar Narino Dhabkar’

Please click on the video

 International Women’s Day 2013
(‘Sahkar Narino Dhabkar’):

Hangati Mahila Mandals began in 1996. It began to get the women out of the four walls of the house and to help them regain their lost dignity as persons. We began the only tribal women’s trust called Hangati trust to carry forward this noble cause. The main goal of this trust is to educate women and make them aware of the social reality and to organise women and capacitate them in various fields of life so that they may become capable of running their life with pride and dignity. This trust is working in more than 30 villages of Songadh taluka, of Tapi district. This trust runs remedial classes for primary school students (almost 2000) and health education for women and children. They also conduct trainings for farmers to upgrade their skills in agriculture and animal husbandry, which in big way has changed the lives of the people in our target villages and has helped the tribals to increase income.

In 1999 as a result of lot of organisational effort at the grass root, Hangati trust began the very first tribal women’s savings and credit cooperative in south Gujarat. In this cooperative there are 3000 members. These members save money and get credit up to Rs. 50000. This cooperative helps poor women to get credit for agriculture, health, education, etc. As the women have started saving money in their own name and are getting credit from their own cooperative, they have gained respect and importance in the family. The cooperative has assets worth Rs. 2 crores. Seeing the fruit of our cooperative other 8 missions came to Hangati, to learn about the organisation and getting motivated they also started the cooperatives for women in their own missions, with our initial support.

Mahila din: is celebrated mainly to get the women out of their houses and village once in a year. This is also an occasion to bring out the hidden talents and to create a joyful and memorable day for the women. As the year (2012-13) was declared as the ‘International Year of the Cooperatives’, the theme of the day was kept - ‘sahkar narino dhabkar’. The program for the day is selected, planned and executed by the women themselves. Today they put up more than 10 items including Rathva, Vasavi, Bhili and Gamit tribal dances. A lady Collector and DSP were invited as the guests.  At the end of the celebration all the women together with the guests were fed sumptuous meal, for which each woman had contributed rice and daal.
