Sad demise of Sr. Chrysantha A. C

“Wait for the Lord,
Be strong and take heart
And wait for the Lord!”
     - Ps.27: V.14

INTRODUCTION

For the past one year Sister Chrysantha has been longing and waiting for the Lord to take her home. She was unafraid of death and was all the while inviting the Lord to take her to Heaven.

Late Sister Chrysantha
She slipped into eternity on the 29th of July, 2014 at 7:45 p.m. after suffering intensely from an illness patiently and lovingly borne. “I offer all my sufferings for the sick and the dying.” She told Sister Veronica, our Superior. To which, Sr. Veronica asked her to pray for intention like World Peace, The Church, Our Congregation, Our Parish and our little community and she agreed to this.

Sr. Chrysantha was born on 12th June, 1926 in Trasi, Kundapur, Mangalore, a picturesque town, bounded by rivers and the sea. Her parents were Joackim Leo Mendonca and Josephine Regina Silva. She was christened as “Stella”, a true star indeed, in her home and in the congregation.

She was the 9th in a family of 14 children, the last 3 of whom are now living. She was brought up tenderly and as she used to say, “They had a very happy family-life”. Since her eldest brother, Titus, had secured a job in Ahmedabad, her second brother John, her younger sister Winnie and she came to Ahmedabad. Both the Sisters were students and Boarders of Mount Carmel High School, Navrangpura. After her studies, she promptly answered the Lord’s call and we are proud to state that she is the first vocation of our school, to the Apostolic Carmel Congregation!

She made her first Profession of Vows in 1951 and thereafter worked in our convents in Pune, Kodarma, Bokaro, Umerkhadi, Nagpur, Digwadi, Gandhinagar, Bandra, Chandigarh, Kharagpur, Goa, Srinagar and in Gandhidham. She came to Mount Carmel, Navrangpura from Gandhidham in 2001, the year of the earthquake. She has worked in different posts, as Assistant teacher, Boarders’ Mistress, and as Principal and Superior. Being a hard working Sister and duty conscious, she was requested to be the pioneer in two of our convents. No doubt, these assignments were difficult. She however, braved it with her prayer, her immense faith in God and the support of her Sisters. She had a great sense of humour and at recreation would enliven the atmosphere with jokes and anecdotes. She would also sing, the old hit songs, some of which have been fondly recorded by one of the Sisters.

She was extremely spiritual and till of late, participated in Mass and other community exercises. She was eager to spread the values of the kingdom through her faith formation classes. The Rosary was always in her hand and she would pray at it constantly.

On the 28th evening she took very ill and on 29th she passed away peacefully as one of our sisters was praying her side.

We thank our Rev. Archbishop Stanislaus Fernandes and our Bishop Thomas Macwan for their visits and spiritual ministrations to Sister Chrysantha and for comforting her with their presence.

We especially thank Father Valerian Dias S.J. her confessor for being there for her in her need and for administering the Sacrament of the sick to her.

We also thank Fr. Vincent Saldanha S.J. who was deeply concerned about Sr. Chrysantha. We are thankful for the services for the solicitous visits, and the support offered by our sisters of the Apostolic Carmel in Gujarat.

We are grateful to Mr. Michael Paul, Administrator of Life Care hospital who went out of his way to assist us.

Her long waiting has come to an end. The Pilot has crossed the bar with her and has leaded her to safe and calm waters.

May she intercede for all of us as she rests safe in the arms of Jesus!

Feast Of St. Ignatius Of Loyola - 31-July-2014

Photo place - Vinayalaya - Andheri

On July 31, Jesuits celebrate the feast of their founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola, who, with his early companions, founded the Society of Jesus in 1540.

St. Ignatius Loyola was born in 1491 to a family of minor nobility in northern Spain. As a young man, Ignatius Loyola was a soldier and dreamed of doing great deeds. But in 1521 Ignatius was gravely wounded in a battle with the French. While recuperating, he experienced a conversion while reading of the lives of Jesus and the saints.

St. Ignatius’ collection of insights, prayers and suggestions in his book the Spiritual Exercises is considered one of the most influential books on the spiritual life ever written. When Ignatius conceived the Jesuits, he wanted them to become “contemplatives in action.” This is also an ideal for those who are guided by Ignatian spirituality and who continually strive to follow St. Ignatius’ motivation to “find God in all things”. - Source : jesuit.org/blog

With this motto, the Jesuits of Gujarat province are serving in North Gujarat, Center Gujarat and in South Gujarat. They are working marvelously for educating people, fighting for rights and social justice, right for food and land, Sharing Christ  etc.  all for the greater Glory Of God . Let us wish them on this special day

Happy Feast to all the Jesuits Of the World.

The way to sow - Fifteenth Sunday of the Year A 13 July 2014

Fifteenth Sunday of the Year A 13 July 2014
Matthew 13: 1-23
José Antonio Pagola

The way to sow
Photo : Google

On finishing telling the story of the parable of the sower, Jesus makes this call: “Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.” We are asked to pay a lot of attention to the parable. But what have we to reflect on? On the sower? On the seed? On the different kinds of soil?

Traditionally, we Christians have paid attention almost exclusively to the kinds of soil on which the seed falls, to reflect on our attitude in listening to the Gospel. However, it is important to pay attention to the sower and his way of sowing.

It’s the first thing the story says: “The sower went out to sow.” He does so with surprising confidence. He sows abundantly. The seed falls and keeps falling all around, even where it seems difficult for the seed to germinate. This is how the Galilean peasants sowed, by sowing even along the borders of the paths and on stony ground.

For the common people it is not difficult to identify the sower. It’s the way Jesus sowed his message. They see him go out every morning to proclaim the Good News of God. He sows his Word among the simple folk who receive him, and also among the scribes and Pharisees who reject him. He is never discouraged. His sowing will not be sterile.
Overwhelmed by a strong religious crisis, we may think that the Gospel has lost its original power and that the message of Jesus no longer has any attraction to draw the attention of men and women today. Certainly it is not the time to harvest extraordinary success, but to learn to sow without being discouraged, with more humility and truth.
It is not the Gospel that has lost its humanizing power; it is we who proclaim it with a weak, vacillating faith. It is not Jesus who has lost the power to attract. It is we who have drained him of his appeal with our incoherence and contradictions.

Pope Francis says that when a Christian does not live a strong adhesion to Jesus, “he soon loses enthusiasm and gives up being sure of what he is transmitting; he lacks power and passion. And a person who is not convinced, enthusiastic, certain, and enamored, convinces no one.

To evangelize is not to spread a doctrine, but to make present within a society and in the hearts of people the humanizing and saving power of Jesus. And this cannot be done in just any way. What’s important is not the number of preachers, catechists and teachers of religion, but the evangelical quality Christians can radiate. What is it we spread like a contagion? Indifference or convinced faith? Mediocrity or a passion for a more humane way of life?

As a Dominican Missionary Sister and as an advocate what is your role in the society ?
As a Jesuit priest and a Para-legal student what is your role in the society ?

Please click on the video to watch Sister Manjula Tuscano an advocate and Rev. Fr. Vincent a student of Para - legal

Sr. Manjula, Photo by BBN
As a Dominican Missionary Sister and as an advocate I, Sr. Manjula Tuscano, want to contribute towards creating a just society, where each and every human being is respected. In our Constitution of India, Part III deals with Fundamental Rights; these Rights say that each and every citizen is allowed to live life with human dignity. The architects of our Constitution gave us this right keeping in mind Article 14 - Equality before Law and Equal Protection of Law. What it means, all should be treated as equals. In Article 21 Right to life and personal liberty, under this Article 21, we have group of Rights, among them, one is Right to live with Human dignity. Man and women all must be respected as human beings.

For instance, today we still have many people living below poverty line (BPL). Do they have sufficient means to meet their basic needs? Don’t they have right to live with human dignity?

Every day in the News Papers we read women, young girls and minor girls being raped, molested and sexually harassed, don’t they have a right to live with human dignity?

I want to be an activist to create a just society, with the help of the women, particularly with women ‘sangathan’ or organizations, where each person, reach or poor, man or women, young and old, must be treated with great respect, support human dignity and their Fundamental Rights are not violated.

- Sr. Manjula Tuscano

A day of Convocation for Para - legal students

Today is 03-July-2014, The Feast Of St. Thomas,
Wish you a very happy feast to all of you.

Nyay Darshan
Nizampura, Vadodara
01-July-2014

A day of Convocation for Para - legal students of the batch of 2013-2014. Indeed it was a day of great joy for all of us at Nyay Darshan where 10 of our students have successfully completed one - year Para – legal course. The training consisted of 5 weeks of classes spread over the year with its practical aspect of various visits to courts and police stations. The course was well organized by Fr. P. D. Matthew S. J. and his team of lawyers.

The Occasion was graced by Rt. Rev. Bishop of Baroda Diocese, Godfrey de Rozario S. J. (The Guest of honour), Rev. Fr. P. D. Mathew S. J, Sr. Ann John (The President of International Guild of Nurses), Rev. Fathers and Sisters and invited guests.

We welcomed the Guest warmly. Prayer song was sang by the students to implore God’s blessings on us. Lighting of lamp was done by the dignitaries symbolizing God’s presence in the midst of us giving the importance to education which is light and life than ignorance which leads us to darkness and death.

Fr. P. D. Matthew explained in brief about the course, its content, values based on secular spirituality and emphasized the urgent need of empowering the people who are exploited in the society by the powerful, rich and corrupt people. Also he encouraged the students, who inspite of their daily apostolic ministries, were able to cope up with the studies, 4 written examinations, and viva of the full course in front of the Board of experts. He also encouraged others to join this course in order to continue the work of Jesus proclaiming the good news of human rights, practicing social justice, eliminating inequality and assuring the dignity of the human being especially of the weaker section of the society.

Rev. Vincent Mookan, Sr. Rekha Parmar and Sr. Regina Senapati expressed their feelings and shared their learning experiences which enriched them with legal knowledge and spiritual values. All felt that it is worthwhile to undergo the pain of studies to empower the weaker sections of society.

The certificates were distributed by Rt. Rev. Bishop Godfrey de Rozario S. J. He emphasized in his speech the value of knowledge utilized rather than burying and keeping in the closed confines of four walls. “We need to feel the pain and sufferings of the exploited and need to cultivate the sensitivity towards the poor and most needy and empower them to affirm their rights” he said and exhorted us to acquire a universal heart that embraces whole humanity irrespective of caste, colour, creed, gender and place of birth.

The programme was concluded by singing National Anthem joyfully and vote of thanks given by Sr. Kundan W. Parmar and Sr. Maria Macwan.

Rt. Bishop Thomas Macwan meets the Holy Father Pope Francis

Dear Fathers, Sisters, Brothers and People of God,

I thank the Lord for giving me the opportunity to meet the Holy Father Pope Francis and spend few moments with him in person. My joy had no bounds as I stood before the Vicar of Christ! It was like meeting Christ

Rev. Fr. V.G. Dhas, our diocesan priest, serving in the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith was the person, who had arranged this meeting with the Holy Father during the General Audience on 4th June, 2014. I sincerely thank him for this service. I was privileged to sit at a very close distance facing the Holy Father for almost 1 and 1/2 hours.

The few moments I got to talk to him personally, gave me the opportunity to communicate your love, goodwill and support to our beloved Pope. I requested him to bless me and all the people of Gujarat, which he willingly did. In the end he said, “Pray for me.” At this juncture I handed him two beautiful stoles prepared by the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary’s Nursing Home, Gomtipur as a gift from the Diocese.

The Holy Father is a precious gift and great blessing to the Universal Church and a great leader of mankind. He is the extension of Christ on Earth. He is working hard to bring about a sea change in the Church and Society. We fully cooperate with him in this noble and difficult task. We also pray for him daily as per his request.

Wishing you God’s blessings!

Yours devotedly in Christ
