Funeral of Bro. Aloysius Macwan

Please click on the video

Bro Macwan Aloysius spent much of his life in the Society serving as Boarding-in charge in Zhagadia, Surat and Varsada. He also served as Minister and Kitchen-in charge of Premal Jyoti for about five years. He was placed in charge of the first hostel for tribal boys in the mission of Vyara in 1967. He was notable for his simplicity and constant availability to the boys. The boys used to wait for his company outside the study hours too. He had great love for them and their families. His influence over them lasted much beyond the years he spent in the hostel. He is still remembered by them even after thirty years. He took great interest in what was happening in the villages during the famine years in 1967-1971 and famine relief work, and supported the Fathers in whatever was required of him in using the services of the boys for the work of the mission. He was simple and unassuming. In his simplicity he was blessed with a kind of earthy wisdom and sagacity that is given “to the unlearned but hidden from the wise and learned.” He was a very pleasant companion. He had a very charming personality to attract and to relate with people. He had been a source of inspiration in the Jesuit Community. He kept the community alive with his spontaneous jokes. He had an art of correcting others and giving feedback with out hurting them. As a Jesuit he never found anything impossible. He used to take up any work and do it to the best of his ability. His famous saying is: “Kai vandho nati, apne joilayea.” It means, “no problem, we will do it.” He was a man prayer and deep convictions. With his spiritual strength and deep convictions, he did his work with great sense of commitment and dedication. Till his death he served as a boarding-in-charge at Khambhat.

During dialysis often I get cramps on both my legs. It is the most painful experience. I cry, pray and sometimes get angry with God, why does he give me so much pain and suffering. Sometimes they have to stop dialysis and make me walk. Once the cramps go dialysis continues.

I find it very difficult to walk. My left knee was injured during a football match way back in 1970. My cartiledge was injured. When I went for Tertianship to Dindigul again I played football and spoilt my knee. I was operated there. The doctor Mallia had warned me that as you grow old you will have good time, i.e. pain in your knee. I was operated in 1975 at Dindigul, Sy. Martha’s hospital.

In 2010 it was very difficult to walk for a long time.
My knee replacement operation was done on 13th April 2012 by Dr. Mihir Dholakia. Operation was successful. Now I can walk without pain. It was done at Sterling Hospital Baroda where I go for my dialysis.

Fr. Prov. Asked me to stay at Jeevan Darshan. 28th April  2012 I shifted to JD. Here better care is being taken. I also belong to St. Joseph community. I can go there whenever I want.

My HB has gone down to 7. Dr. Dabhi treating me and hope to improve upon it.

University launches free certified courses - by cmpaul

A Catholic University in India offers free university certified on-lone courses for learners across the globe.

“DBU Global launched its very own MOOC (Massively Open Online Courses). It is open to the general public, absolutely free, says Vice Chancellor of Don Bosco University Dr Stephen Mavely.

The Don Bosco University director of Distance Education Dr Francis Fernandes explains, “Increasingly MOOC is seen by learners across the globe as the next ‘big thing’ in education, which allows traditional universities to allow public and private participation, and grant certificates.”

DBU Global’s MOOC initiative, uGlobal (accessible at www.uglobal.org), in partnership with University18, saw the launch of a Certificate Course in Management with some 2,600 students from across the Indian Sub-Continent enrolling in the first few weeks of its opening. Others include courses offered in Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Business Strategy.

Explaining how the uGlobal.org works DBU Global director Mr. Raunak Singh Ahluwalia says, “We use a series of pre-recorded lectures taught in an easy to follow manner. The program delivers an introductory level course and learners who complete the assessments successfully receive a certificate from the University.”

uGlobal also partners with the Indira Gandhi National Open University for the delivery of a few other programs, and intends to add on other Universities from around the country.
By the end of 2013, DBU Global hopes to have about 10,000 students enrolled over a variety of MOOC Courses in uGlobal, all taught gratis!

Please Pray for Lucia Jayanti Parmar from
Xavier Nagar- Padhariya- Anand

She fell down from the first floor staircase and injured her hands. She was admitted and  she had to go through operation yesterday in Anand. Would request you to pray for speedy recovery

Fr. Luis Arza Erasu (Spanish Missionary) passed away on 02-07-2013 in Jivan Darshan - Baroda

Who was Fr.Luis Arza ?

A late vocation hailing from the Seminary of Pamplona. Soon after his novitiate he was sent to India where he received all his Jesuit training. He was sent to Anand as a spiritual father to the boarders. That was one of his most fruitful 13 years in the ministry at Anand. Arza’s hard work in Dediapada is still remembered. His contribution to the welfare of adivasi while in Surat is said to be an enduring monument to his zeal and love for the oppressed and the dispossessed. His six years of efficient service at St.Joseph’s Baroda appear to have left a lasting impression on all who benefited from his work there.

The clergy of Baroda still remember him with affection and gratitude for his fatherly guidance during his stint as the rector of the diocesan seminary. His liberty and generosity as a genial host is still cherished by those who enjoyed his hospitality in Valsad. Sevasi too has enjoyed his contribution in terms of making peace between rival groups, improving the conditions in the hostel, setting the accounts right and making the farm productive. The Jeevan Darshan Community too was fortunate to have him as a superior cum chaplain of the shrine. The tireless servant of the lord was force to rest due to a stroke that made his speechless for the last several years at Jeevan Darshan.

50 YEARS IN THE SOCIETY OF JESUS - Rt. Bishop Godfrey de Rosario S.J.

Bishop Godfrey has completed 50 golden years in the Society of Jesus. He has been a happy journey, full of notable successes. He was one of the small groups of Novices who inaugurated the new Novitiate of the Gujarat Jesuit Province in Mt. Abu 50 years ago.
Rt. Bishop Godfrey de Rosario S.J.

During his formation in the Papal Seminary at Pune he fell under the spell of Fr. Tony de Mello, and graduated with honours in practical psychology and counseling. While doing a full time job as Vice-Principal of St. Xavier’s Loyola Hall, he boldly attempted to take a Masters in Education, attending classes on weekends in MS University, Baroda. In spite of the short time he could dedicate to the preparation for his final exams, he stood second in the university, missing the gold medal by a few marks. This success earned him the sobriquet of being “the best educated man in the Gujarat Jesuit Province.”

With these formidable credentials he was first appointed Principal of the High school in Zankhvav and then for several years he was Principal in St. Xavier’s High School, Gandhinagar. He hobnobbed with ministers and secretaries of the Gujarat Government. He made friends with politicians, but he never played politics. His success in Gandhinagar was cut short by being appointed Provincial of the Gujarat Province. He was just two years in this responsible high post; but this short period became his training ground for a still higher post. He was ordained Bishop of Baroda by Cardinal Pimenta on Innocents day 1998.

Bishop Godfrey is well known and appreciated for his bonhomie and ingratiating good manners. He treats guests with the most refined courtesy, and that is one of the reasons for his heavy schedule when he is in Baroda. He has plenty of people who come to visit him bringing along problems, asking for advice, begging for help. They go back generally well pleased. He is also regular in visiting pastorally the various districts of his vast diocese.Congratulations, Bishop Godfrey, on your 50 golden years in the Society of Jesus.
