BOOK LAUNCH “Federalism in India: Towards a Fresh Balance of Power“

BOOK LAUNCH function organized by CCD
Photo courtesy: FB of Fr. Lancy Lobo

In the presence of intellectuals, social activists and eminent retired college professors Lord Bhikhu Parekh on 7th Aug evening released “Federalism in India: Towards a Fresh Balance of Power“, a learned book prepared by CCD (Center for Culture and Development) under the able guidance of Dr.(Fr) Lancy Lobo, S.J. The book contains articles by eminent scholars who throw light on the federal structure of our government. The venue was the VasviK Auditorium on the Race Course, Vadodara. The auditorium was packed to capacity with very distinguished personalities from different branches of sciences. After releasing the book Lord Bhikhu Parekh kept the audience spell bound for nearly an hour, offering valuable insights in the federal structure of our government that has eminently succeeded in ruling a nation consisting of multiple variety: cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious. As he lauded our federal structure he also made the audience aware of the dangers that may destroy the healthy characteristic of our democracy and lead the nation to the doom our neighboring countries are sunk in. He also reminded us of our duty, as responsible citizens, to oppose vigorously any such moves by the extremists.

At the beginning Fr. Lancy Lobo welcomed Lord Bhikhu Parekh and the invitees and also informed them about the activities as well as the function of CCD; Fr. Provincial, Francis Parmar, monitored the question hour that followed Lord Bhikhu Parekh’s speech and we, the few Jesuits who attended the function, returned home feeling extremely proud of the Jesuit intellectual apostolate carried out through CCD.

Sunday Gospel Reflection - 10-August-2014

Nineteenth Sunday of the Year A – 10 August 2014
Matthew 14: 22-33

Photo: Google
Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

IN THE MIDST OF THE CRISIS
By José Antonio Pagola

It is not difficult to see in the boat of the disciples of Jesus , battered by the waves and tossed about by a contrary wind, the image of the Church today, threatened from the outside by all kinds of adversities and tempted within by fear and little faith. How do we read this Gospel story from the angle of the crisis in which the Church seems today to be floundering?

According to the evangelist, “Jesus approaches the boat walking on the water.” The disciples are not able to recognize him in the midst of the storm and the darkness of the night. He seems to them some kind of a ghost. Fear keeps them terrorized. That powerful storm is the only reality.

This is our first problem. We are going through the crisis in the Church by transmitting to each other discouragement, fear, and lack of faith. We aren't able to see that Jesus is coming to us precisely on account of this strong crisis. We feel more than ever alone and defenseless.

Jesus speaks three words to them: “Courage. It is I. Do not fear.” Only Jesus can speak to them in this way. But their ears only hear the crash of the waves, and the strength of the wind. This is our mistake too. If we do not listen to the invitation of Jesus to place our unconditional trust in him, to whom shall we go?

Peter feels an inner impulse and sustained by the call of Jesus, he leaps from the boat and “goes towards Jesus walking on the water.” This is how we must learn today to walk towards Jesus in the midst of the crisis: relying not on the power, prestige and securities of the past, but with the hope of meeting Jesus in the midst of the darkness and the uncertainty of the present times.

It’s not going to be easy. We too can hesitate and sink like Peter. But just as he did we can feel that Jesus stretches out his hand and saves us as he says to us: “Men of little faith, why do you doubt?”

Why do we doubt so much? Why is it that we are learning hardly anything new from the crisis? Why do we look for false securities to “survive” within our communities, without learning to walk with renewed faith towards Jesus in the very midst of the secularized society of our times?

This crisis is not the end of the Christian faith. It is the purification we need to free ourselves from worldly interests, deceptive and distorting desires for the kinds of success that have been distancing us from Jesus in the course of centuries. He is at work in this crisis. He is leading us towards a more evangelical Church. Let us revive our trust in Jesus. Let us banish fear.

Eucharist and Truth is the newest Catholic App

The perfect Catholic app.

Eucharist and Truth is the newest Catholic App that provides Catholics with the right
set of tools to help them find Christ through the Internet.

Eucharist and Truth started as Catholic non-profit website hosted and developed since May 2012
by a Catholic student, Emanuel Estrada Larios, who realized that the Internet, one of today's
most-used tools, was a way for Catholics to improve their faith.

The Eucharist and Truth website quickly became popular, but it was missing a very
important field: mobile devices. After realizing that, Emanuel and his family started working toward
one big goal: developing the best Catholic App.The app was finally completed in July of 2014.
It will be available for free, although the cost of maintenance is high. We kindly ask for your support
and prayers to keep this project alive.

This app offers faith-related content, to help you come closer to God through:
Daily Mass Readings, Guided Rosary, Largest Prayer Library, Bible Browser,
Church Finder, Mass Times, Latest Catholic News, and more.

Eucharist and Truth started as a website, which is currently used by hundreds of Catholic
people who want to grow in faith. We are proud to launch the newest Catholic app for iOS
to take this even beyond a desktop experience.

Golden Jubilee - Sr. Antoinette 13-July-2014

50 Golden years of Committed life in the vineyard of the Lord!

Photo: BBN
It was 13th of July, 2014 Sr. Antoinette celebrated her Golden Jubilee of religious profession. Prior to it she has given ample time to prepare herself for this event. The celebration was at Dediapada. The jubilarian led to the altar by the beautiful entrance dance performed by the boarding children. The main celebrant was Fr. John Lobo accompanied by many priests. During the mass Sr. Antoinette renewed her vows and it was followed by a touching homily. Sr. Antoinette gave witness of her life saying her motto right from the beginning of her religious life had been to follow the paschal mystery and truly it has been. She has spent long years in the apostolate of education in Junagadh, where she had to undergo a lot of suffering due to the various problems created by students & parents. But she remained firm and nothing deterred her. After her retirement as a principal she continues her mission with the same spirit taking care of the boarding children.

Soon after the mass there was felicitation and it was followed by meal to everyone. Later the boarding children presented a beautiful program and showered on her flowers and gifts. We, the Carmelite Missionaries thank the Lord for the gift of this great missionary. May God bless her abundantly.

You give them something to eat - 3 August 2014 Sunday Gospel Reflection

Eighteenth Sunday of the Year A

3 August 2014
Matthew 14: 13-21

You give them something to eat

Jesus is busy healing those sick and malnourished people brought to him from all over. He does so, according to the evangelist, because their suffering moves him deeply. Meanwhile, his disciples notice that it is getting very late. Their dialogue with Jesus allows us to enter deeper into the profound significance of the episode wrongly called “the multiplication of loaves”.

The disciples make Jesus a realistic and reasonable proposal: “Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Jesus has already given them the attention they needed. Now let each one return to his/her village and buy themselves something to eat according to their resources and possibilities.

The reaction of Jesus is surprising: “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” Hunger is too serious a problem to allow us to wash our hands of each other and let people solve their own problem as best they can in their own villages. It is not the time to drift apart, but to get together closely more than ever to share all there is with one another without excluding anyone.

The disciples make him realize that there are only five loaves and two fishes. It does not matter. The little there is suffices when people share generously. Jesus orders all to be seated on the ground to celebrate a grand meal. Suddenly everything changes. Those who were about to separate from each other to satisfy their hunger in their own village, feel themselves united around Jesus to share the little they have. This is how Jesus wishes to see the human community.

What happens to the loaves and the fish in the hands of Jesus? He does not “multiply” them. First he praises and thanks God; that nourishment comes from God - it belongs to all. Then he keeps breaking them and giving them to his disciples. These in turn keep giving them to the people. The bread and the fish have been passed on from one to another. Thus they have been able to satisfy their hunger – all of them.

The archbishop of Tanger has raised his voice once more to remind us that “the suffering of thousands of men, women and children who, left to their fate or persecuted by governments and abandoned to the enslaving power of usury of mafias, beg, survive, suffer and die on emigration routes.”

Instead of joining forces to eradicate hunger in the world from its roots, all that occurs to us is to enclose ourselves in our “selfish well being” by raising barriers ever more degrading and murderous. In the name of which God do we see them off to drown in their misery? Where can we find the followers of Jesus? When do we hear in our Eucharistic celebrations the cry of Jesus: “You give them to eat”?
