A DIFFERENT FAMILY - HOLY FAMILY

Rev. Fr. Valentine de Souza S.J.
A DIFFERENT FAMILY
José Antonio Pagola,

Catholics almost instinctively defend the value of the family, but we do not stop to reflect on how family life, based on an understanding of the gospel and its values, would unfold. What would a family inspired by Jesus be like?

The family, according to him, has its origin in the mystery of the Creator who attracts a man and a woman to become “one flesh”, sharing their lives in a mutual self-giving, prompted by a free and gratuitous love. This is basic and decisive. This loving experience of the parents can generate a healthy family.

Following the deep call of their love, the parents become a source of new life. It’s their most exciting task. It can give a fresh depth and horizon to their love. It can strengthen and enhance forever their creative work in the world.

Children are a gift and a responsibility, a difficult challenge and unparalleled satisfaction. The conduct of Jesus, in always defending the little ones, and embracing and blessing children, suggests a basic attitude: to nurture the fragile life of those beginning their journey through this world. No one can offer them anything better.

A Christian family tries to go through an original experience inserted in a modern, indifferent and agnostic society : to build a family founded on Jesus. “Where two or three are gathered in my name there I am with them.” It is Jesus who inspires, sustains and directs the healthy life of the family.

The home then becomes a privileged place to undertake the most basic experiences of the Christian faith: trust in a Good God, friend of the human being: the attraction for the way of life of Jesus; the discovery of the project of God to build a more dignified, just and kind world for all. To achieve all this, the family reading of the Gospel is a decisive experience.

In a home where life is inspired by simple faith in Jesus, lived with great enthusiasm, the result is a family always welcoming, sensitive to the suffering of the most needy, where all learn to share and commit themselves to a more humane world; a family that does not live enclosed in their own interests and ambitions but lives open to the human family.

Many parents today are overwhelmed by different problems, and too alone to face their task. Could they not receive more specific and effective help from Christian communities? Many believing fathers and mothers would benefit from meeting, sharing their worries and supporting each other. It is not in the spirit of the Gospel to demand of them heroic tasks and then ignore their struggles and sleepless nights.

Sermon For 24th December Night

BELIEVING WOMEN

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
                                                                       Luke 1, 39-45

Rev. Fr.Valentine de Souza S.J.
At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!

But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!”

BELIEVING WOMEN
José Antonio Pagola

After she received the call of God announcing to her that she would be the mother of the Messiah, Mary sets out on her way alone. A new life, at the service of her son Jesus, begins for her. She moves quickly, with determination. She feels the need to share her joy with her cousin Elizabeth and to put herself at her service in the last months of her pregnancy.

The meeting of the two mothers is an unusual scene. No males are present. Only two simple women, with no rank or relevance in the Jewish religion. Mary carries Jesus along with her everywhere and Elizabeth full of a prophetic spirit dares to bless her cousin without being a priest.

Mary enters the house of Zechariah but does not go to him. She goes directly to greet Elizabeth. Of the content of the greeting we know nothing, except that the salutation filled the house with overflowing joy. It is the joy that Mary experiences since she heard the voice of the angel:“Rejoice, you who are highly favored!”.

Elizabeth could not contain her surprise and her joy. As soon as she heard the greeting of Mary, she feels the movements of the creature she carries in her womb and interprets them as “leaping for joy”. Then she blesses Mary exclaiming “in a loud voice”:“Blessed are you among women and blessed is the child you will bear.”

At no time does she address Mary by her name. She regards her totally identified with her mission: she is the mother of her Lord. She sees her as a believing woman, in whom the plans of God will be fulfilled.

What surprises her most is the behavior of Mary. She has not come to show her dignity as mother of the Messiah. She is not there to be served but to serve. Elizabeth cannot get over her astonishment:“But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”

Quite a number of women do not live in peace in the Church. Indifference and unease keeps growing in some. They suffer when they see that in spite of being the first to collaborate in many areas, they are hardly counted on to think of , decide , and promote the progress of the Church. This situation is hurting all of us.

The weight of centuries of history, controlled and dominated by males, prevents us from realizing how impoverished the Church is by dispensing with a more effective presence of women. We may not listen to them, but God can raise believing women, full of a prophetic spirit who can infect us with joy and give the Church a more human face. They will be a blessing. They will teach us to follow Jesus with more ardor and fidelity.

Contribute to the conversion of the Church

WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT (C)
Luke 3, 10-18

Rev. Fr.Valentine de Souza S.J.
“What should we do then?” the crowd asked. John answered, “The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same.” Tax collectors also came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them. Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay”

The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ. John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
José Antonio Pagola

The preaching of John the Baptist shook the consciences of many. The prophet in the desert was telling them aloud what they were thinking in their hearts: they needed to change, return to God, prepare to receive the Messiah. Some of them approached him with this question: "What should we do then?"

John has thought out his message very clearly. He does not want to add new religious practices to their lives. He does not ask them to stay on in the desert doing penance. He does not speak of new precepts. They have to receive the Messiah by caring for the needy.

He is not lost in sublime theories or in profound motivation. In a direct way, in the most pure prophetic style, he summarizes everything in a brilliant formula: “The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same.” And we, what must we do to welcome Christ into this society in crisis?

First of all, try harder to find out what’s happening: lack of information is the first reason for our doing nothing. On the other hand, do not tolerate lies or cover-up of the truth. We must know in all its brutal reality the suffering unjustly being caused among us.

It wont do to be satisfied with little acts of generosity. We must take steps towards a more sober way of life; to dare to experience “impoverishing ourselves” little by little, cutting down on our present level of prosperity to share with the most needy so many things we have and don’t need.

We can take special care of those who have got into serious situations of social exclusion: those evicted, deprived of health care, without any income or other social resources… We must instinctively go out in defense of those sinking helplessly, or have lost all motivation to face their future.

In Christian communities we must develop various initiatives to be close to cases of social abandonment that hurt the most: specific information of situations, mobilization of people so as not to leave anyone out; provision of material resources, management of possible aid…

It’s going to be a long crisis. In the coming years we are going to be given the chance to humanize our crazy consumerism, make ourselves more sensitive to the suffering of victims, grow in practical solidarity, contribute to denouncing the lack of compassion in the management of the crisis… It will be our way of welcoming Christ more truly, realistically, in our lives.

Contribute to fostering compassion for those who suffer

Chennai:
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has said that she progressed in her life because of her schooling in Christian institutions.

"The education and virtues taught there are the reasons for my progress. What I learned there are aiding me even today and help me in facing any big responsibilities," she said during a Christmas function in Chennai.

She said that she had attended Sunday Bible classes at the Bangalore school and therefore had knowledge of all stories said in it.

The chief minister also recalled her schooling at Bishop Cotton in Bangalore and Holy Angels and Church Park Convents in Chennai.

"They preach the morals required for daily life and I am proud to say I have followed them," she said.

She also thanked the teachers in her schools for helping her with a "strong foundation."

The Chief Minister, who cut a big cake to mark the occasion, said Lord Jesus had preached love even to foes and urged one and all to follow it.

Yesterday was

Human Rights Day

The United Nations' (UN) Human Rights Day is annually observed December 10 to mark the anniversary of the presentation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

What do people do?

Events focused on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are held worldwide on and around December 10. Many events aim to educate people, especially children and teenagers, on their human rights and the importance of upholding these in their own communities and further afield.

The day may also include protests to alert people of circumstances in parts of the world where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is not recognized or respected, or where the importance of these rights are not considered to be important. Cultural events are also organized to celebrate the importance of human rights through music, dance, drama or fine art.

Public life

Human Rights Day is a global observance and not a public holiday.

Background

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was drafted between January 1947 and December 1948. It aimed to form a basis for human rights all over the world and represented a significant change of direction from events during World War II and the continuing colonialism that was rife in the world at the time. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is considered as the most translated document in modern history. It is available in more than 360 languages and new translations are still being added.

The UN General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, France, on the December 10, 1948. All states and interested organizations were invited to mark December 10 as Human Rights Day at a UN meeting on December 4, 1950. It was first observed on December 10 that year and has been observed each year on the same date. Each year Human Rights Day has a theme. Some of these themes have focused on people knowing their human rights or the importance of human rights education.

Symbols

The UN symbol (an azimuthal equidistant projection of the globe centered on the North Pole surrounded by olive branches) is often associated with Human Rights Day. Copies of the whole Universal Declaration of Human Rights are also regarded as symbolic of Human Rights Day and are often distributed on or around December 10.

OPEN NEW PATHS TO JESUS

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Luke 3, 1-6

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert.

He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all mankind will see God’s salvation.’ (NIV)

OPEN NEW PATHS TO JESUS
José Antonio Pagola

Rev. Fr.Valentine de Souza S.J.
The early Christians saw in the conduct of John the Baptist the prophet who decisively prepared the way for Jesus. So, through the centuries, the Baptist has become a call always urging us to prepare ways that will allow us to welcome Jesus among us.

Luke has summarized his message in this cry taken from the prophet Isaiah: “Prepare the way of the Lord.” How should we listen to this voice in the Church today? How should we open ways for men and women of our times to encounter him? How should we welcome him in our communities?

The first thing is to realize we need a much more lively contact with his person. It is not possible to survive only on the nourishment religious doctrine provides. It is not possible to follow a Jesus who has become a sublime abstraction. We need to identify ourselves with him in a vital relationship, to allow ourselves to fall in love with his way of living, to absorb his passion for God and the welfare of humanity.

In the midst of the “spiritual desert” of modern society, we must conceive of and shape the Christian community as a place where the Gospel of Jesus is welcomed; create an experience that unites believers, lukewarm believers, those who hardly believe and even unbelievers, drawn together around the Gospel story of Jesus; give him an opportunity to permeate with his humanizing power our problems, crises, hopes and fears.

We must not forget him. In the Gospels we do not learn an academic doctrine on Jesus, inevitably destined to grow old over the centuries. What we learn is a way of life valid for all times and in all cultures: the way of life of Jesus. Doctrines do not touch, much less win hearts; they do not convert people. Jesus does.

Direct and immediate experience of the Gospel story brings into being a new faith in us, not through “indoctrination” or “theoretical learning”, but through vital contact with Jesus. It is he who teaches us to live the faith, not out of obligation but by attraction. He inspires in us a Christian life not as a duty but by being drawn to it through contagious influence. By contact with the Gospel we recover our true identity as followers of Jesus.

By following the story of the Gospels we come to realize that the invisible and silent presence of the Risen Christ takes on human features and acquires a specific voice. Suddenly everything changes: we can live accompanied by Someone who puts meaning, truth, and hope into our existence. The secret of the “new evangelization” lies in putting ourselves in direct and immediate contact with Jesus. Without him it is not possible to engender a new faith.

Open new paths to Jesus

Christians to be a deciding factor in Dang

Christians to be a deciding factor in Dang
Melvyn Thomas, TNN Nov 29, 2012, 11.14PM IST

SURAT: Christians in the state may have a little or no say during the assembly elections, but there is one constituency in the tribal-dominated south Gujarat where this minority community could become a deciding factor.

Out of the total 1.44 lakh voters in the newly formed 173-Dang assembly constituency, there are 36,450 tribal electorates from Christian community and 46,659 from Kanbi community. There are 29,934 voters from Bhil, 19,475 from Varli and 3,237 from Muslim communities in this constituency. Earlier, Dang and Vansad in Valsad formed the assembly segment with 1.99 lakh voters until the constituency's boundary was redrawn by Election Commission of India.

Looking at the vote sharing percentage in the Dang assembly constituency, the tribal Christians could be a deciding factor with 26 per cent vote share though Kanbis may have a larger vote share of 31 per cent.

In 2002 assembly elections, Dang-Vansda assembly constituency had elected Congress candidate Madhubhai Bhoye for the fourth consecutive term defeating BJP's Vijay Patel with a margin of 10,147 votes. In 2007 assembly elections, the 1.99 lakh electorates in the Dang-Vansda constituency voted in favour of Vijay Patel. He won with a margin of over 7,000 votes. This ended the two-decade long dominance of Congress.

This time around the Congress and the BJP have given tickets to non-Christian candidates. The BJP has renominated the sitting BJP MLA Vijay Patel as its candidate while Congress has given ticket to Mangal Gavit. However, Gujarat Parivartan Pary (GPP) has fielded a Christian Yogesh Bhoye.

Political pundits said Dang district has come a long way after the communal unrest against Christians in 1998. In 2006, Subir in Dang district was in the limelight following the anti-conversion movement by the saffron groups.

In the 2010 district and taluka panchayat elections, the BJP had offered tickets to five Christian candidates from Subir, including two women.

"There is always a benefit for certain community which dominates a region like Christians do in Dang. This increase the bargaining capacity and speeds up development. There is a massive change in the district after the 1998 communal riots. Now, the tribal residents in Dang support those who talk of development," said Satyakam Joshi, associate professor, Centre for Social Studies ( CSI).

Joshi said, "Dang is the only assembly constituency among the total 182 in Gujarat where you have Christian voters. But over the last many years polarization has definitely increased in Dang. In a family, one could find a brother following Hinduism and his other sibling Christianity."

A Jesuit priest said, "Christian voters here will vote for development. There is no fundamentalism whatsoever in the Dang district."

Sister Prasannadevi in Junaghad forest

On 1st of Jan 1974, hearing God's call, Sr. Anne arrived the first time in Gujarat. She travelled all the way from south to west just to attain what she was called for . Sr. Anne had in the deepest corner of her heart the thought of taking up Indian Sanyasa. When the convent of Little Stars of Blessed. Fr. De Foucauld in India was closed down due to legal problems, this could not be considered anything less than a door opened by God,so that Sr. Anne may fulfill God's own will. Thus she started the life of a wanderer (Parivrajaka) which is considered as a must for any Sanyasis in Indian tradition.

In her quest for an Ashram life, she had visited most of the well-known ashrams and pilgrim centers of India and some of the leading Sanyasis of India like Swami Jnananda and Ramana Maharshi. She inspired her life by visiting and understanding the life styles of Shri Buddha, depicted in Ajanta, Ellora Caves, the prayerful atmosphere of Kurisumala ashram, Vagamon by Francis Acharya, Arunachala and Shantivanam, the spiritual birth place of Swami Abhishiktananda.

Sr. Prasannadevi's house
In 1975 she finally found a home for her hermit life near Atmeshwar (Girnar. Her friends built her a small hut in1976 which was called "Jyoti Mandir" now "Sneha Deepam", on the bank of a stream. This was an answer to her quest of a place to carry out her vocation. In July 1978, she was visited by Rev. Fr. Dominic of Ashirwanam Monestry (Kenkeiry, Banglore), whom she considers her Guru. He inclined his spiritual strength, prayers and teachings and continued his tsay in a hut opposite to Sneha Deepam till 1980. Fr. Dominic came because of an initiative-thought of Rt. Bishop Jona, the first Bishop Of Rajkot, to start an Ashram. Fr. Dominic though did not know the local language, through his silence and presence had inspired many visitors who started considering Fr. Dominic their Guru.

Slowly and steadily Sr.Anne dissolved into the life of all the people who visited her. As time passed she started getting visitors from all over Gujarat. Some visited her occasionally, some regularly and some became  her very close friends. She by her simple living and teachings, has inspired hundreds and thousands of people.

On 13th March-1975 Late Rt. Bishop Charles Gomez S.J. visited her on her birthday and in 1978 Rt. Bishop Jonas came and gave Sr. anne the right to have communion regularly. Those days once a week mass was celebrated and nowadays every Sunday  mass is conducted at Sneha Dipam by the parish priest of Junaghad.

On 25th March 1997 in the presence of Rt. Bishop Gregory Karotemparel the Bishop Of Rajkot. parish council members,Carmelite sisters and youth of Junaghad: Sr. Prasannadevi made her perpetual vows as a hermit and were canonically accepted by the church. Sr. Anne would really have longed for such a day.

In1999 her Hindu friends celebrated her arrival in Junaghad In year 2000,completion of 25 years of Sr. Anne's hermit life was celebrated in the presence of Bishop of Rajkotand the Junaghad parish.
Sr. Prasannadevi's Chapel
Sr. Anne had an inspiration from God , in which God said that He was pleased with her, and this is how Sr. Anne became Sr. Prasannadevi (The name which was officially given to her by Fr. Domnic). This grace of God has led her to live her hermit life with utter simplicity but with a great discipline . She rises up at 4:30 every morning and starts her day with prayer. Once it is enough light in her garden, she collects the most  beautiful  flowers and keeps them at the tabernacle. She has a small chapel which was built by her well wishers, and it is the holy place where she recites her prayers and mass is celebrated on Sundays..

Describing about Sneha Deepam, it is a pure natural living place. It has a small hut where Sr. Prasannadevi lives and also a grotto and in front of it is a stream of water flowing through the rocks. She has cultivated a beautiful garden with variety of plants and colorful flowers. She also feeds birds and mongooses that come to her garden. She loves to spend her time in garden.

She really has a loving heart with which she welcomes all who come to visit her. Her presence itself is inspirational. All the non Christians who visit her call MATAJI and great each other by saying " Jai Prabhu". Her simplicity and loving nature is very well revealed in the way she addresses all her visitors. All her visitors respect and love her and are very keen to visit her again and again . She also visits the poor people who are seriously sick and are hospitalized. Her love, prayer and guidance have helped many people. She also helps many poor people in the village financially, with the little collections she has from the visitors.

The complaint mostly raised against the hermits is that they lead a very passive life, since they remain in the forest cut away from the active life of the world. But Sr. Prasannadevi has successfully combined both action and contemplation, It is her strong faith in God which has kept her firm to follow her vocation and fulfill God's will.

- Rojan Joseph

Rev. Fr. Vinod CMI
We thank Rev. Fr. Vinod CMI the parish priest of Junaghad who took us to the forest to Sneha Deepam. We also thank Mr. Graem Tolly for this wonderful visit. During BBN interview with Sr. Prasannadevi, she expressed her feeling that she may not like her photo or video in any media. She said, " Jesus must increase and I must decrease". and therefore we will not be able to publish her photo here or in any media.

Bharatanatyam is a classical Indian dance form originating in the South Indian state of  Tamil Nadu. This dance form denotes various 19th and 20th century reconstructions of Sadir, the art of temple dancers. Sadir in turn, is derived from ancient dance forms. Another aspect of this dance is Acrobatic Bharatanatyam

As Sister Elish Macwan Said the name depicts is the combination of: 'Bha' - Bhavam (means expression), 'Ra' - Ragam (means music), 'Ta - Talam (means beat or rhythm) and Natyam (means dance) in Tamil.
Bharatanatyam is a reworked dance-form from the traditional "sadir" known for its grace, purity, tenderness, and sculpturesque poses. Today, it is one of the most popular and widely performed dance styles and is practiced by male and female dancers all over the world.

Yesterday there were two Catholic girls Shika and Chadani performed one of the dances on the Life of Mother Mary on their Certification day at St. Mary's School, Nadiad, Gujarat. FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING - 25-11-2012

Photo : Google

FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING (B)
John 18, 32-37

Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?” “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.” “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” (NIV)

MAKE THE TRUTH KNOWN
José Antonio Pagola

The trial of Jesus probably took place in the palace of Pilate where he resided when he came to Jerusalem. There, one April morning of the year thirty, a helpless prisoner called Jesus and the representative of the powerful imperial system of Rome, met.

Rev. Fr.Valentine de Souza S.J.
The gospel of John reports the dialog between the two. In fact, more than an interrogation, it appears to be a discourse of Jesus to clarify some issues of great interest to the evangelist. At a certain point Jesus makes this solemn declaration: “For this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of the truth, listens to me.”

This statement reflects a basic feature that defines the prophetic career of Jesus: his will to live in the truth of God. Jesus not only speaks the truth, but he seeks the truth, and only the truth of a God who wants a more humane world for all his sons and daughters.

For this reason, Jesus speaks with authority, but without a false show of it. He speaks with sincerity , without being dogmatic. He does not speak like the fanatics who seek to impose their truth. Neither does he speak like officials obliged to defend what they do not believe in. He never feels he is a guardian of the truth but its witness.

Jesus does not turn the truth of God into propaganda. He does not use it to his own advantage, but in defense of the poor. He does not tolerate lies, or cover-ups of injustices. He does not back manipulation. Jesus thus becomes “a voice of the voiceless, and a voice against those who have too much of a voice.” (Jon Sobrino)

This voice is more necessary than ever in our society trapped in a serious economic crisis. The great financial powers and the political management under their control presumably function through suppression of the truth. They want us to live out the crisis in a web of lies.

Everything possible is done to cover up the responsibility of the main agents who caused the crisis. The suffering of the weakest and most defenseless victims meanwhile is ignored in a vicious manner. We urgently need to humanize the crisis and to put at the center of our concern the truth about those who are suffering and the priority to be given to an increasingly serious situation.

It is the most important truth to be recognized by all if we do not want to be inhuman; the key data to consider before any other. We must not get used to the social exclusion and the despair the weakest continue to suffer. Those of us who follow Jesus must hear his voice and instinctively go to their defense and help. Whoever belongs to the truth listens to his voice.

Work as a witness to the truth

Father Cedric Prakash is the recipient of several awards and honors internationally including the French "Chevalier of the Legion of Honor," and an award by the President of India for his work in promoting human rights and religious harmony.

At a special ceremony held at the City Council Chamber to felicitate the selfless advocate of human rights and champion of peace, Mayor Kellogg paid tribute to the decades of stellar service to humanity rendered by Fr. Prakash.

In his speech, the Mayor recalled the Gujarat pogrom, in which 2,000 people were brutally massacred and over 150,000 displaced, as one of the darkest chapters in Indian history. He reminded the audience however, that "the struggle for justice in the aftermath of the Gujarat carnage is a story of selfless service, of a relentless quest for peace and of undying love for humanity." Mayor Kellogg added that Fr. Cedric Prakash is one of those rare individuals who symbolize these great qualities.

"Fr. Prakash's work shows us that in the midst of appalling cruelty and terrible crimes against humanity, there exists compassion, selflessness and an inspiring conviction in the brotherhood of humanity," Mayor Kellogg stated.

"I feel truly humbled by this award from the city of Harvey," said Fr. Cedric Prakash. "I accept it as an acknowledgement of the reality of the Gujarat Genocide of 2002, which will remain forever, a monumental tragedy in the history of India. This award is also a reminder that none of us should be quiet until the cause of justice has been met," added Fr. Prakash.

"The decision by the City of Harvey to honor Fr. Cedric Prakash, is a reminder that our common values of justice, compassion and protection of the weak and dispossessed transcend geographical distance and citizenship of a specific country," said Shaheen Khateeb, President of IAMC.

The event was attended by 2nd ward Alderman Joseph Whittington, 4th ward Aldermen Michael Bowen and 5th Ward Aldermen Donald Nesbit.
