Obituary - Funeral service of Late Sr. Flaviana A.C.

Please click on the below given video for the funeral service

Sr. Flaviana A.C.

Born: 22.11.1928
Died:16.11.2014

You are my Lord, I have no God apart from you (Ps. 15: 2)

Sr. Flaviana nee Cecilia Dominica Aroja was born on 22nd November, 1928 in Mangalore to Mr. Lawrence Aroja and Mrs. Rosa Joseph. She was the 7th child of nine children of whom 6 survived. She was made much of by her family as she was the first girl after 5 boys.

Sr. Flaviana had a very happy childhood. She completed her primary studies in Holy Angels Convent and later in St. Ann School, Mangalore run by the Apostolic Carmel Sisters. She would often say that she got her vocation to religious life due to the strong faith and integrity of life of her pious parents. She learnt early in life to pray, converse with God and love our Blessed Virgin Mary all, taught to her by her parents. The challenges and the difficulties in her childhood made her strong to learn to adjust to her future life. She made a decision to follow her Lord and she never looked back. Her older brother Fr. Gratian who had join the seminary at Ajmer was her great support, confidante, and her guide.

Sr. Flaviana joined the Apostolic Carmel on 31st May 1949 and made her 1st profession on 22nd May, 1952 as a religious sister. She did all that was entrusted to her to the best of her ability. She has rendered loving and dedicated services as a teacher and superior in our convents in Calicut, Mangalore, Pune, Goa, Delhi and Gujarat. I must say that Sr. Flaviana has selflessly toiled in Gujarat Mount Carmel Navrangpura, Jivan Sarita Ashram Mehsana and Carmel Cote for 39 years. She has spent more than half of her religious life in this land of Gujarat. To many, she came across as a very serene, calm, understanding, supportive and a loving person. Through her life, she has drawn many Gujarati young girls to the Lord, to follow their vocation to the religious life. Her unassuming ways and her appreciative nature made the sisters very comfortable in her presence and in the community. She had a soft corner for the needy and always reached out to them. Sr. Flaviana has also served in NBCLC in Bangalore for 5 years as treasurer and as an office administrator. She has also been the provincial treasurer for 6 years in our Province.

As a teacher she was very effective where she connected the subjects with values. Her students still remember the value education lessons she would conduct. She made them very interesting and enriching, always keeping God at the center.

Sr. Flaviana has bravely faced all trials, difficulties and illnesses with great courage and faith in God. Her source of strength was the Lord in the Eucharist. She spent hours at times when the winds were disturbing and rough. She held on to the anchor of her faith, Jesus.

Her end came rather unexpectedly. A fall on 19th September left her incapacitated. She was operated upon the following day at Uma hospital Naroda by Dr. Nalin Patel. She suffered tremendously. Every moment was a torture, yet not a complaint escaped her lips. She would express her gratitude to her and all those who visited her and for little things done to her.

For the past few days her sufferings had reached its peak. God in His mercy has accepted her sacrifice and taken her to Himself.

We are grateful to Bishop Thomas Macwan, Arch bishop Stanislaus, our parish fathers, and all the fathers and the sisters, dear ones of Sr. Flaviana, specially her dear brother Fr. Gratian of Indore Diocese, who was very much concerned about her well being and the friends who paid kind visits to her.

While we mourn her death, we are grateful and feel privileged to have had her in our community. May she intercede for us, her dear ones, our parish, the Congregation and specially the people of Gujarat whom she loved so much. May she rest in the arms of Jesus eternally.

Ma: Maha Tirth – MOTHER: Tabernacle of God

Introduction

Ever since it was declared by the holy Catholic Church to celebrate the year 2014 as the YEAR OF EUCHARIST, I, as the Pastor at Unteshwari, was deeply reflecting on the importance of the Sacrament and the sacramental aspects of the Holy Eucharist. As a flash back I immediately recalled the learning of my theological days on Eucharist and what I wrote finally in the comprehensive thesis under our humane Dr. Bandhu Ishanand, SJ for my Bachelor of Theology in 1997 at Premal Jyoti, Ahmedabad. Let me mention below a few assimilated points on our daily Eucharistic life and its celebration.

·         The Kingdom of God is the central mission of Jesus and it is a gift and task for humans. The Eucharistic celebration clarifies the mission of Jesus.

·         It gives a fascination of the mission. It gives energy to carry on the mission which is unfinished by Jesus. By this we are called to establish the World Family Ideal (cf. vasudhaiva kutumbakam) where everyone will be as brothers and sisters.

·         This ideal is grounded on –
Ø  SHARING all that we have and all that we are.
Ø  EQUALITY through table fellowship and calling God alone as One Abba Father.
Ø  SERVICE LEADERSHIP by washing each other’s feet and always choosing the least.
Ø  FORGIVENESS by reconciling with one another; with creations; and with God.
Ø  POSITIVE JUDGEMENT to see good in others; to be compassionate with one another; to condemn the sin and to love the sinner.
Ø  OPTION FOR THE POOR by opting to be poor and to be with the poor and marginalized.
Ø  BRINGING FAMILILAL JUSTICE among the lost and the least members of the family.

·         Today, in the context of the broken people, the Eucharist will become meaningful only when we break bread with the broken people, their brokenness will be broken; and their hunger and thirst will be subsided.

·         Only in this way the Eucharistic celebration can reflect the establishment of the reign of God. This is what each Eucharist celebration of ours must aim at!

Today, after these many years while living and loving, moving and meeting all kinds and categories of people in the villages and towns in North Gujarat, I fondly once again recall the above mentioned bullet points and try to live out the Eucharist in the context of our inclusive mission in our region. In this context, I as a pilgrim pastor, along with other pilgrims of the Unteshwari Tirthadham (Shrine of Our Lady of the Camels), try to accompany them in the process of searching and finding God in all persons, things, events and situations. One such process is to accompany the socially and economically poor pregnant women of our local and neighbouring villages. By such an attitude we feel that they are the living tabernacles of God who deserve our reverential bow!

Meaning and Mandate

In our biblical understanding we are aware that the tabernacle it meant a fixed or a movable dwelling place. In Old Testament it meant a tent used as a sanctuary for the Ark of the Covenant by the Israelites during the Exodus and until the building of the Temple.
In our context today, as Catholics, besides adoring with full devotion the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapels, Churches, Shrines and Basilicas, we with our clear inclusive Faith – Justice mandate felt like accompanying such living and moving tabernacles with full respect and reverence for we feel that such wombs of the pregnant women are the dwelling presence of God our Creator – Redeemer - Sanctifier! Hence, such precious living sanctuaries (garbha gruha) deserve our humble veneration and adoration. Keeping this socio-pastoral thrust in our inclusive mission, so far we have identified and gathered about 40 such pregnant young women and on 6th November, 2014, on an auspicious FULL MOON day (Dev Diwali) at Unteshwari Matrudham we had the inaugural function in the presence of the village head persons and a few local well wishers.

Objectives

·         To promote pro-life and to make participants realize their self-worth as precious persons and to join joyfully in the co-creative works of God.
·         To improve the nutritional and health status of foetuses and children in the age-group 0-1year.
·         To lay the foundation for proper psychological, physical, social and spiritual development of the child.
·         To reduce the incidence of mortality and malnutrition.
·         To achieve effective co –ordination of policy and implementation amongst the various government and non-government departments to promote child development.
·         To enhance the capability of the mother to look after the normal health and nutritional need of the child through proper nutrition and health education.
·         To advocate as a disability prevention programme.

Methodology

·         Every participant will go through the full 12 months course for 12 times from the date of admission.
·         The monthly meeting is arranged on every full moon day for two hours from 9.30am – 11.30am.
·         Every meeting will have one professional resource person to accompany the pregnant women on various integral themes. The sessions will be conducted by using the multi-media tools.
·         At the end of the session a nutritional kit (1kg gol - jaggery, 1 kg soji - semolina and 500ml tel - oil) is shared as a token of nurturing love to the mother and child.

Conclusion

Having heard about this novel initiative by our Unteshwari Sammilitalayam, the local and neighbouring Hindu, Muslim and Christian well wishers have already appreciated our Early Childhood Intervention programme and have promised their continuous physical and financial support in accompanying their own community pregnant women. Thus, in this way the local and neighbouring villagers too are indirectly motivated through our interventions to participate in such corporal social responsibilities. Well, in this way the Eucharistic action is actualized and a miracle of modern multiplication has started taking place at our Marian hillock. Hence, another world is possible!
At this juncture we seek for the blessings of our Eucharistic Lord to bless all our poor pregnant women and their children, their husbands and families, village communities and our centre. Sincerely it has been a new experience for all of us to encounter such pregnant women entering the Shrine with full reverential devotion and gaze at the statue of the fertile Unteshwari Mata with her infant son Jesus. Certainly, it looks how this blessed and beloved Mother Mary is very appealing for these young pregnant women for they too long to experience such motherhood by bearing children! Finally, I must articulate that along with other objectives our humble attempt is to make all humans of our times to encounter from the beginning His dwelling presence in such a tabernacle of God, which is a real Divine centre, locally called Tirthadham! Hence, it is apt to proclaim Ma as Maha Tirth; Mother as Tabernacle of God!

Girish Santiago, SJ

Funeral : Br. Eneriz Manuel (Manolo)

Please click for the funeral video and interviews of people who worked with him

Br. Eneriz Manuel (Manolo)

He came to India in 1953 and since then he had been the faithful handyman at Anand Press. His contribution to Anand Press has been enormous not only in solving every kind of mechanical problems but also dealing with many human problems. With his innate gentleness, characteristic simplicity, unassuming personality, genial temperament and unfailing goodness, he had been able to exert a wholesome and pacifying influence on the workers in the press. Even when he had to face unrefined behavior, aggressive attitudes and downright insults, he took it all in stride, never losing his perspective and eventually bringing the recalcitrant back o the path of reason and right conduct. Like the Master who had always been his modal and strength, he had been a man of forgiveness and forbearance, accepting, encouraging and comforting, even those who had been difficult to deal with. He had been very patient in training new recruits, in demanding standards of excellence from the workers and always showing them the way by his own personal example of total dedication. Even though a brand new office was put at his disposal, he preferred to walk around among the workers and the machines.

Though he had been one of the strong pillars of Anand press, for whose phenomenal fame he had been one of the main causes, he had manifested exemplary humility by choosing to avoid the limelight and instead to be content with being an assistant for over 5 decades. Jesuits and coworkers had been edified by his humility, sense of humor, infectious joy and his ability to laugh at himself and make others laugh with him.

BEFORE IT’S LATE - Jose Antonio Pagola

THIRTY SECOND IN ORDINARY TIME
BEFORE IT’S LATE
Jose Antonio Pagola
Matthew 25, 1-13
Photo: praisesnprayers.com
“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

“At the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “ ‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. “Later the others also came. ‘Sir! Sir!’ they said. ‘Open the door for us!’ “But he replied, ‘I tell you the truth, I don’t know you.’ “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

Matthew wrote his gospel in critical times for the followers of Jesus. The coming of Christ was being delayed too long. The faith of many people was growing weak. It was necessary to reawaken the spirit of their earlier conversion.

Motivated by this concern, he put together three parables of Jesus and worked a profound message into them to recall all to responsibility:

·     “Do not wait for others to give you oil to light your lamps; you yourself have to take care of              your  faith.
·      Do not be satisfied with burying your talent in the ground; you have to take risks to make it            productive.
·      Do not wait for Christ to appear to you; you can find him now itself in all who suffer.”

The first parable speaks of a wedding feast . Full of joy, a group of virgins goes out to meet the groom. Not all of them are well prepared. Some take oil with them to light their lamps; others have not even thought of doing so. It’s enough to carry lamps in their hands.

Since the bridegroom was a long time in coming, “they all felt drowsy and fell asleep”. The problem begins when the arrival of the bridegroom is announced. The wise virgins light their lamps and enter with him to join in the banquet. The foolish ones are obliged to go out to buy oil. By the time they return “the door is shut”. It’s too late.

It’s a mistake to try to find the secret meaning of the oil: is it a metaphor for spiritual fervor, of the interior life, of good works, of love…? The parable is simply a call to live our attachment to Christ responsibly and truly now itself, before it is too late. Every one will know what he has to take care of.

It is irresponsible to call ourselves Christian and live our religion without making any effort to resemble him. It is a mistake to live self-satisfied in the Church, without a true resolve to be converted to Gospel values. It is the mark of an unenlightened Christian to call oneself a follower of Jesus, and not join the project of God he wants to see happen.

In these times in which it is so easy to grow slack, become skeptical, and continue living safely the way one has got used to, I find only one way of being in the Church: converting myself to Jesus Christ.
