Late Sr.Montse - her missionary life

Montse was born in Barcelona on January 7, 1935 in the midst of a large family of eight brothers, as she told us. They were a close family and very religious. She was the youngest of all. Her mother died in childbirth, and although her father was father and mother to her, not knowing her mother, marked her life.

After doing secretarial studies, she entered the Institute on September 14, 1964 and made the First Vows in Xavier on August 14, 1967.She made her final Vows in Pune, India.

In 1968 she went to Japan to give a service of two years and then being appointed to India. In 1971 she went to India ... coming from Japan and the contrast of these two countries was very strong for her. Poverty in India struck her so that she decided to become a nurse to help and assist people in villages lacking health care and other basic aspects of life. She was appointed to Gujarat to work with the people of the tribes of Nana Kantaria and Tanakla and she gave herself to the sick that came from afar in serious conditions. She was a great naturopathy enthusiast; soon she started a garden of medicinal plants, made syrups and tonics to overcome the lack of vitamins and malnutrition of people.

Montse also had a very artistic streak and the girls in the boarding and the sisters of the community know well about the decorations and paintings that adorned all the celebrations and festivities they had.
Sometimes she hinted to us that she felt called to a more contemplative life and took advantage whenever she could to retire to Ashrams and engage in that contemplation she wanted. She combined her intense spiritual life with dedication and total devotion to the sick. Her simple and transparent soul harbored a strong personality. She carried out what she intended with fidelity to the Institute.

Montse, you outgrew India and have devoted the last years of your missionary life to China, in Huilai leprosarium. Before leaving China you had the great opportunity to visit the island of Sancian where St. Francis Xavier died.

She came to Spain and, after spending a couple of months with her family in Barcelona, she joined the community of Pamplona where we felt that she was happy. We said many times how happy she was in the community, supporting the sisters when they went to the hospital and at the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in San Ignacio. She could go on holidays with her brothers and enjoyed a lot.

As you know, in September, walking through the city she felt ill and was taken to the hospital. The tests showed she had an inoperable brain tumor. The sisters of the community have been noticing as Montse’s health deteriorated.

In November she could not rise from her chair so she went to Xavier. During her illness, of which she was aware from the start, she raised her hands and eyes to heaven in silent and contemplative prayer.

She died yesterday, January 26, 2013. Her family has been coming to Pamplona and Javier and accompanied her during her illness, even in her last moments. Present at her death were Conchita, Oriol and Mireia and nephews Maria Luisa and Dani.

Montse, your life has been a great gift of God to the poor and to all of us who have been fortunate enough to live with you. You still remain with us. Montse, give us your desire for God and your dedication to others

We thank God for the life of Montse. Her availability that led her to China ...
We feel that the encounter with the Father of every Missionary unites us all more so, despite the pain we feel.

Votos Perpetuos: Pune, India.

Make the Prophet of God known - José Antonio Pagola

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Luke 1,1-4; 4,14-21

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.

Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.

He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read.

The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

THE PROPHET
José Antonio Pagola

In a remote village of Galilee called Nazareth, the locals gather in the synagogue one morning to listen to the Word of God. After a few years seeking God in the desert, Jesus returns to the place where he had grown up.

 Rev. Fr.Valentine de Souza S.J
The scene is very important to come to know Jesus and understand well his mission. According to Luke’s account, in this village almost unknown to everyone, Jesus is going to present himself as a prophet of God and explain his plan of action by applying to himself a text of the prophet Isaiah.

After reading the passage Jesus explains it with a single sentence:“Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Luke notes: “The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.” The attention of everyone shifts from the words read to the person of Jesus. What can we today discover if we fix our eyes on him?

Moved by the Spirit of God. The entire life of Jesus is driven, led and directed by the prompting and guidance of the love of God. To believe Jesus is God, is not to profess in theory a dogmatic formula worked out by the Councils. It is to keep discovering in a concrete way, in his words and his actions, his tenderness and his fire, the ultimate Mystery of life we believers call “God”.

The Prophet of God. Jesus was not anointed with olive oil as were kings, to confer on them the power to govern, or high priests to invest them with sacred power. He was “anointed” with the Holy Spirit of God. He does not come to govern or to rule. He is a prophet of God dedicated to freeing life. We will only be able to follow him if we learn to live with his prophetic spirit.

Good News for the poor. His work is Good News for the most marginalized and helpless social class: those who need to hear something good; those despised and forgotten by all. We begin to be like Jesus when our lives, our work, and our love leading to solidarity with the poor is perceived by them as something good.

Dedicated to liberate. He spends his life liberating human beings from every kind of slavery. People see him as one who saves from suffering, oppression and exploitation; the blind experience him as light that frees from meaninglessness and despair; sinners receive him as grace and forgiveness. We follow Jesus when he delivers us from all that enslaves, belittles, or dehumanizes us. We then believe in him as the Savior who leads us to eternal life.

The History Of St. Xavier Umreth on Golden Jubilee

St. Xavier's Golden Jubilee, Umreth

Umreth used to be just one of the villages attended from Anand for over 30 years by Late Fr. Surya. In course of time it became a sub-centre of Nadiad and the field of apostolate of a host veteran missionaries between 1931 and 1934. Living there alone; Frs. Sallas, A. J. Lobo, P. Puche A. Osset, C. Gomes, Luis Martinez, I. M. Savall and especially Fr. Oroz.

In the 1940s-50s Umreth had only a rickety and leaky house in the town's mohollo, with barley anything to cook meals or even sufficient furniture.Fr. Oroz used to give away everything, he was content with a morsel of coarse bread with onions or chas (butter-milk, water-milk).

It was the tenacious efforts of heroic Fr.Oroz that created Umreth Tabo (Parish). He toured thousands of miles on cycle, forgetting his own food and rest. He lived for years in an unhealthy stuffy hovel, but remained always cheerful, always an optimist in spite of disappointments and poor response. It was the dream of Fr. Oroz to have in Umreth a beautiful church , a good High School with a boarding where the promising children of the mission would be given a through Christian education. Despite enormous scarifies to achieve this end, he did not live to see it fulfilled.

Fr. Navarro took up the challenge and dedicated his few years in Umreth to make this dream a reality. There were but a few scattered Catholics in Umreth when Fr. Navaro took charge. He immediately started a Primary School with a boarding for boys.

Retired Teacher Shree Gabriyelbhai ( 89yrs old)
with his students
Encouraged by the pioneer Srs.Tusseaux, Luise Agnosa and Mary Mercy (The Salatian Of Mary Immaculate, of the Ave Maria Convent) and by their cooperation he ventured into education. With Sr. Mary Augustine as principal he opened eight standards in 1964, with three teachers and 170 pupils. The following year the school had 252 students, and in 1966 there were 292 on the rolls.

Present Church, Umreth
Fr. Navarro's great benefactress Mrs Winnifred Dias, The Mother of Gujarat Jesuit Fr. Donald Dias, sponsored a church   in Fr Oroz's memory. Fr. Navarro saw to its completion. The new church was blessed by Bishop Pinto on the feast of  Our Lady Of Fatima, 13 May 1963. Fr. Navarro reports: : Before the blessing, the wind started blowing with great fury and we were enveloped in a cloud of dust. Then it rained slightly. But within half an hour the sky was clear again and adorned with a double rainbow. It remained one of Fatima. Dr. Anandprasad, an old friend of late Fr. Oroz, who attended the ceremony, on seeing the rainbow, shouted at me:"Fr.Navarro, see the rainbow, he (Fr.Oroz)is here with us!"...All those present praised the Church as one of the most beautiful in the diocese.

On 4 December 1963, Bishop Edwin Pinto canonically erected the parish of Umreth as separate from Nadiad.

In November 1967, another energetic, zealous and visionary missionary, Fr Francisco Cabanach, was appointed to Umreth. The Primary School became a High School and he had plans for expansion. He also planned and brought to realization a "Model Kindergarten" which was very well attended. The new complex was inaugurated on 26 October 1969. Fr. Navarro was transferred to Unai, Fr. Cabanach took over as Manager.

St. Xavier's Umreth became the centre of attraction not only for the people of the town, but also dozones of villages up to Virpur and beyond, some fifty miles north-east of Umreth.

Eventually, Umreth Mission outgrew itself. It opened two other Centres, Thasara and Balasinor, with their respective missionaries: Priests and Sisters.

Later on the Parish was taken up by Ahmadabad Diocese, Gujarat.

Present Principal Rev. Fr. Anthony Raj
The school celebrated Golden Jubilee on 20-01-2013 by the present Principal of the School Rev. Fr. Anthony Raj. Rt. Bishop Thomas Macwan (Ahmedabad Dio.) and many priests, sisters, ex-students, retired teachers and many more people were present for the celebration. The school has given a lot of good teachers, professors, businessman, doctors, advocates, scientist and a lot of valuable personalities to the world.

HARDLY A RELIGIOUS GESTURE -José Antonio Pagola

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
John 2, 1-11

Google
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Dear woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, g each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

 HARDLY A RELIGIOUS GESTURE

         José Antonio Pagola
Translated by Rev.Fr. Valentine de Souza S.J.

Rev. Fr.Valentine de Souza S.J.
“There was a wedding in Galilee.” This is how this story begins in which we are told something unexpected and surprising. There’s nothing religious about the first public involvement of Jesus, the one Sent by God. It does not happen in a sacred place. Jesus inaugurates his prophetic activity “saving” a wedding celebration that could have been a disaster.

In those poor villages of Galilee everyone loved weddings. For several days friends and relatives kept the bridal couple company, eating and drinking with them, dancing as they did at festivals, singing love songs. The Gospel of John says that it was at one of these weddings where Jesus did his “first sign”, the sign that gives us the key to understand all his activity and the deep meaning of his saving mission.

John, the evangelist, does not speak of “miracles”. He calls the amazing acts that Jesus does “signs”. He does not want his readers to dwell on the spectacular aspect of what he does. He asks us to discover its deeper meaning. To help us do so, he gives us some leads of a symbolic nature. Let us see only one.

The mother of Jesus, with an eye on all the happenings at the wedding, realizes “they have no wine”, and says as much to her son. Perhaps the couple, of humble origin, has been swamped by guests. Mary is concerned. The party is in danger. How can you have a wedding without wine? She trusts Jesus.

Among the farmers of Galilee, wine was a well known symbol of joy and love. Everyone knew it. If there is no love and joy in life why stay together? Mary is not mistaken. Jesus intervenes to save the festivities providing abundant wine of excellent quality.

This action of Jesus helps us to understand the direction and fundamental content of his whole life and of his project of the kingdom of God. While the religious leaders and teachers of the Law are engaged with religion, Jesus devotes himself to making the life of people more human and bearable.

The gospels present Jesus concerned about life, not religion. He is not there only for pious and religious people. He is also for those who have been disappointed by religion, but feel the need to live a more dignified and happy life. Why? Because Jesus communicates faith in God in whom we can trust and with whom we can live with joy; because he draws us to a more generous life, lovingly shared in solidarity with all others.

Spread the joy and saving power of Jesus

BAPTISM OF THE LORD (Luke 3,15-16.21-22)

BAPTISM OF THE LORD    (Luke 3,15-16.21-22)

Google
The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ. John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

John the Baptist does not want the people to mistake him for the Messiah. He is aware of his limitations and recognizes them. There is someone more powerful and important than him, the only one whom the people must welcome. The reason is clear. John offers them a baptism of water. Only Jesus, the Messiah, “will baptize them with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”

According to many observers, the greatest problem of the Church today is “spiritual mediocrity”. The Church does not have the spiritual strength she needs to face the present challenges. It’s becoming increasingly clear. We need to be baptized with fire and his Spirit.

The lack of trust in the power of the Spirit and the fear of everything that can lead us to a renewal has been growing. There is much emphasis on continuity to preserve the past, but we aren’t concerned about the call of the Spirit to prepare for the future. We are slowly getting blind when it comes to reading “the signs of the time”.

Primacy is given to certainties and beliefs to strengthen the faith and to gain greater Church unity in relation to modern society, but, sadly, a stronger attachment to Jesus is not fostered. Have we forgotten that he is much more powerful than all of us? Religious doctrine, nearly always explained in pre-modern terms, does not touch our hearts or change our lives.

Having given up the spirit of renewal of the Second Vatican Council, the enthusiasm of important sectors of Christians has been dying out, to give way to resignation. In a silent but remarkable way the separation between the institution of the Church and a considerable number of believers has been growing.

We need to create without delay a more friendly and loving atmosphere. Not just anyone will be able to awaken in ordinary people the lost vision. We need to return to the roots of our faith; to put ourselves in contact with the Gospel; to nourish ourselves with the words of Jesus which are “spirit and life”.

Within a few years our Christian communities will become very small. In many communities there will no longer be resident priests. How important it is then, from now, to create a core of believers living a life inspired by the Gospels. They will preserve the Spirit of Jesus among us. Everything will be more modest, but also more in keeping with the Gospel.

It is up to us to begin already the renewal. The best gift we can leave as a legacy to future generations is a new love for Jesus and a faith centered more on his person and on his project. All else is secondary. If they live inspired by the Spirit of Jesus , they will find new ways.

Spread the Spirit of Jesus

One of the Muslim cuoples said that the children are gifts of God and they were happy to have a baby from Matruchaya.

A DISTURBING STORY - José Antonio Pagola

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY
Matthew 2, 1-12
English Translation by Rev. Fr.Valentine de Souza S.J.

 Rev. Fr.Valentine de Souza S.J.
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.”

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:

“ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.’’”

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.

On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

A DISTURBING STORY
José Antonio Pagola

Quite different attitudes can be adopted in the presence of Jesus. The story of the Magi tells us about the reaction of three groups of people: some pagans who seek him out, guided by the faint light of a star; the representatives of the religion of the Temple who remain indifferent; the powerful king Herod, who only sees a threat in him.

The Magi do not belong to the chosen people. They haven’t heard of the living God of Israel. We know nothing of their religion nor of the people they come from, except that they are aware of the mystery behind the cosmos. Their hearts seek the truth.

At some time they began to believe they saw a little light that signified a Savior. They need to know who and where he is. At once they set out on their way. They aren’t sure of the precise route to be followed, but in their hearts, there burns the hope of finding a Light for the world.

Their arrival in the holy city of Jerusalem touched off a general scare. Summoned by Herod, a Council of the “chief priests and scribes of the people” meets. Their behavior is disappointing. They are the guardians of the true religion, but they do not seek the truth. They represent God, but they are deaf to his call.

The security they feel in their religion, blinds them. They know where the Messiah will be born, but none of them will go to Bethlehem. They devote themselves to the worship of God, but they do not suspect that the mystery of his being is greater than all religions put together, and he has his ways to be in contact with all his children. They will never recognize Jesus.

The autocratic and brutal King Herod sees only a threat to his power and cruelty in Jesus. He will do all he can to eliminate him. All a powerful oppressor can do is to “crucify” anyone who brings liberation.

Meanwhile the Magi continue their search. They do not bend the knee to Herod. They do not find anything to worship in him. They do not visit the grandiose Temple of Jerusalem: they are forbidden to enter it. The tiny light of the star draws them to the little village of Bethlehem, far from any center of power.

On their arrival, the only thing they see is “the child with Mary, his mother.” Nothing else. A child bereft of power and splendor. A delicate life that needs the care of a mother. It’s enough to awaken in the Magi a desire to worship.

The story is disturbing. Those established in power or hardened by religious security will not find this God hidden in human frailty. He is revealed to those who guided by little lights, incessantly seek hope for the human being in the tenderness and poverty of life.

Awaken faith in an incarnate God.
