CHRISTIANS CONTRIBUTE TO THE CONSCIENCE OF GUJARAT

Rev. Bishop Thomas Macwan
“We Christians have played a significant role in forming the conscience of the people in Gujarat,” said Bishop Thomas Macwan in a personal interview given in his office at Mirzapur, Ahmedabad on July 8, 2011.

Bishop Macwan was speaking about a lacuna in the type-set copy of a book entitled “Vikasna Humsafar…” about the Contributions of Christians to the Development of Gujarat. After reading the whole book, Bishop Macwan appreciated it saying that “it would be an excellent production”.

“I felt contented with the materials you have chosen for the whole book. They are good and extensive, taking all aspects of human life! The topics are well chosen and treated comprehensively with expertise. The book has a lot of historical materials and it would be an excellent reference book,” added Bishop Macwan.

Elaborating on Christians’ contribution to the forming of conscience of the people in the State, Bishop Macwan said that in his journeys like in a train trip he often meets people who have studied in Christian schools, colleges or other institutions. “When I asked them what they have profited most from a Christian institution, inevitably most people would say that they have profited most from the moral science classes”, said Bishop Macwan.

“All our schools impart moral education and we are educating a good number of boys and girls in our schools. Ahmedabad Diocese alone educates 52173 students. Gandhinagar Archdiocese has fewer students than us; but Rajkot Diocese and Baroda Diocese – each educate many more students than Ahmedabad Diocese!” said Bishop Macwan.

“Then, there are thousands of Christian teachers in the government run primary schools. They also contribute in the forming of moral conscience of their children” added Bishop Macwan.

Bishop Macwan also said that some of our institutions like Social Work Centres, Legal Aid Centres, Prashant, etc. are contributing much to the formation of conscience of the people in Gujarat.
