Happy Feast of St. John Bosco, January 31, 2015

Today we celebrate the patron saint of youth, boys, and editors, St. John Bosco. Well known across the globe as the founder of the Salesian Order, he was also the educator of St. Dominic Savio, one of the youngest canonized saints the Church has in her communion.

Don Bosco

Hailed as one of the greatest teachers of his time, St. John Bosco, or affectionately known to many as Don Bosco, viewed education as the means to help Christian youth find their place in corporate society. He was the master of classroom management, good discipline rooted in liberty, and a strong Catholic identity. For Don Bosco, interpersonal relationships were his primary approach when reaching children. He advised many of his teachers to take this approach with the children under their care.

He was the first priest to introduce daily reception of Holy Communion into boarding schools. When asked by his students how one could live a long and healthy life, his maxim consisted of four things: always have a clear conscience, moderation in eating, live an active life, and surround yourself with good companions.

We could spend a plethora of blog posts talking about his educational philosophy, but for today, I want to provide you with 10 sayings of his when it comes to teaching and life in general. If you are an educator and would like to know his educational pedagogy, I suggest the book, The Educational Philosophy of St. John Bosco. It’s an excellent read and you will surely gather practical insight for your classroom and for life.

Don Bosco said…

1. “Without confidence and love, there can be no true education. If you want to be loved…you must love yourselves, and make your children feel that you love them.”

2. “The school was not the end; it was rather the instrumental means for improving the way of life.”

3. “If one is to do good, he must have a little courage, be ready for sacrifice, deal affably with all and never slight anybody. By following this method I have always had significant success, in fact, marvelous success.”

Particularly to Youth he would say…

4. “Act today in such a way that you need not blush tomorrow.”

5. “Do not put off till tomorrow the good you can do today. You may not have a tomorrow.”

6. “Let us strive to fare well in this life and in the next.”

7. “Be slow to pass judgment.”

8. “Do you want your companions to respect you? Always think well of everyone, and be ready to help others. Do this and you will be happy.”

9. “Run, jump, have all the fun you want at the right time, but, for heaven’s sake, do not commit sin!” (from St. Philip Neri).

10. “Servite Domino in laetitia!” (Serve the Lord joyfully!)

For me, Don Bosco was a major influence in my teaching when I taught high school theology in both Phoenix and Austin. I have read his educational philosophy a couple of times and often used many of the quotes from above in my classroom. Although my new position at the parish is fantastic, reading through the text and writing this blog post has made me miss teaching a bit, well at least the part of teaching that doesn’t have to do with grading.

Women’s Day at Kapadvanj - 2014

It was indeed a fantastic sight to see groups of women come singing, dancing and laughing into the campus of Don Bosco, Kapadvanj. Along the way, as many of them came walking from the main road to the house; they were stopped by people who asked what was going on. They were coming to celebrate their special day. Yes they were celebrating Women’s Day. They wanted to show that cooperation among women is the source of their strength, which was the theme chosen for this year’s Women’s Day. The celebration of Women’s Day was brought forward to 25 February 2014 since we were not sure when the code of conduct would be enforced because of the upcoming elections.

The Chief Guest, Ms Ritaben Patel, TDO Kapadvanj and the Guest of Honour, Ms Sejalben Brahmbhatt, Corporator, Kapadvanj Municipality arrived on time so we began the programme as per schedule even though all the women had not yet arrived. In fact women from the different villages carried on trickling in long after the commencement of the programme. Seven hundred and fifty women registered themselves at the registration desk but some women arrived after registration ceased.

The high points of the programme were the distribution of cash credit certificates to nine self help groups to the tune of 5 lakhs. The Annual Report was also released with great fanfare. One of the women also presented an appeal to the TDO for a gutter line in their village. Ms Patel was both surprised and delighted that for the first time a woman handed over an application to her. She promised speedy action

After the usual introduction, garlanding, lighting of the lamp and so on, the women themselves took control and put up a meaningful programme. They put up plays challenging the present culture of child marriage and foeticide especially of the girl child. One group put up a play in which the roles of husband and wife were reversed. The woman was the breadwinner and the husband the home-maker. This is something that would have been unthinkable a few years back. Still another group forcefully insisted on young people being tested for AIDS before agreeing to marriage.

The women themselves bore the cost of the sumptuous meal that was served to all. Over and above the monetary contribution from each group, two groups donated the rice and the potatoes too.



All the women went home full of joy and appreciation for the work of Don Bosco Kapadvanj.

 સામાજિક સંસ્થા દીપ ડોન બોસ્કો - ડાકોર ખાતે તા. 16-01-2014 ના રોજ ડાયરેક્ટર ફા.આઈઝેકના નેતૃત્વ હેઠળ આદર્શ ગામ તથા પીઆરએ અંગે એક સેમીનાર રાખવામાં આવી ગયો. આ પ્રસંગે આમંત્રિત મહેમાનો ઠાસરા તાલુકા વિકાસ અધિકારીશ્રી ડી. ડી . સાધુ સાહેબ, "દ્રીષ્ટિ"ડોન બોસ્કોના ડાયરેક્ટર ફા મયંક પરમાર, ફાલ્ગુની બેન  તથા સિ. વંદના , મિ. મેલ્વિન  પાંગ્યા તથા મનીષભાઈ ના હસ્તે દીપ પ્રાગટ્ય કર્યું હતું

 ત્યારબાદ આમંત્રિત મહેમાનોનું  આવકાર સાથે સ્વાગત કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું. રેવ. ફા. મયંક પરમારે આદર્શ ગામની સમજુતી આપી હતી. ત્યારબાદ ઠાસરા તાલુકામાંથી આવેલ સરપંચશ્રીઓ દ્વારા તેમના અનુભવો રજુ કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા. તાલુકા અધિકારી શ્રી સાધુ સાહેબે આદર્શ ગામ  વિષય  ઉપર પ્રવચન આપી સર્વેને સાથ સહકાર આપી વિકાસ તરફ આગન વધવાની હાંક આપી હતી.

 બોસ્કો ગ્રામીણ વિકાસ મંડળ  વાલવાંડે  - મુંબઈથી રિસોર્સ  પર્સન મિ. મેલ્વિને પીઆરએ પદ્ધતિને ઝાંખી કરાવી હતી ત્યારબાદ   ઠાસરા તાલુકામાં આદર્શ ગામ 26 ગામના સરપંચોને  ફોર્મનું વિતરણ કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું.

 આ સેમીનાર ઠાસરા તાલુકાના સરકારી કર્મચારીઓ, તલાટીઓ, સરપંચો, સ્વસહાય જૂથના પ્રમુખ અને મંત્રીઓ સૌ મળી 170 વ્યક્તિઓએ ભાગ લીધો હતો.

 આ તમામ કાર્યક્રમની સફળતા પાછળ  રેવ. ફા. આઈઝેક તથા સ્ટાફના  વિજય પરમાર, સુશીલા ખ્રિસ્તી, સુમિત્રા સોલંકી તથા મનીષા પરમારની મહેનતથી સર્વેમાં આનંદની લહેર જોવા મળતી હતી.

Seminar for an Ideal Village - Deep - Don Bosco - at Dakor

  A seminar for an ideal village and PRA was held under the leadership of the Deep-Don Bosco director Rev. Fr Isaac on 16th Jan 2014 at Deep-Don Bosco-Dakor. The lighting of the lamp was done by the TDO (Taluka Development Officer) of Thasra-Gujarat, Rev. Fr.Mayank Parmar, the director of ‘Drishti’ of Don Bosco-Kapadvanj, Falguniben, Sr. Vandana, Mr. Melvin and Mr. Manish to invoke God’s blessings. 

 The invited guests were greeted with a warm welcome. Rev. Fr Mayank explained about ‘Aadarsh(Ideal) Village to the gathere people. Two of the invited sarpanchshree shared their experiences. The Taluka Officer Mr. Sadhu gave a speech on aadarsh(ideal) village and motivated the invitees to step forward on the path of development with the co-operation of each other.

 The resource person Mr. Melvin from Bosco Rural Development Board-Mumbai explained about PRA method(system). After that the forms of Aadarsh village were distributed among the sarpanchs of 26 villages.

 Around 170 People including government officers, talati and sarpanchs of Thasra taluka took part in the seminar.

 All appreciated the successful seminar and the credit goes to Rev. Fr Isaac,  the staff members Vijay Parmar , Sushila Christian, Sumitra Solanki and Manisha Parmar.

ગઈકાલે  કપડવંજમાં DRISTI  (Don Bosco Roral Integral Social Training Institute)ડોન બોસ્કો દ્વારા મહિલાઓને માન, સન્માન અને રક્ષણ મળે તે માટે ભવ્ય રેલીનું આયોજન કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું . આ રેલીમાં છસોથી પણ વધારે બહેનો ગામડાઓમાંથી આવી આ રેલીને પ્રતિસાદ આપ્યો હતો . ગામડાઓમાં જયારે બહેનોને થતી જાતીય કનડગત કે પછી સમાન હક નથી મળતો ત્યારે તેની સામે વિરોધ કરવો અઘરો બની જાય છે. આ સંજોગોમાં DRISTI સંસ્થા જે કપડવંજના અંતરાળ ગામોમાં સ્ત્રીઓના ઉત્થાન માટે કામ કરે છે તે સ્ત્રીને સાથ સહકાર આપવા કાર્ય કરી રહે છે. બચત મંડળો તથા સ્ત્રી સશક્તિકરણના કાર્યક્રમો દ્વારા જન જાગૃતિ લાવવાના ધ્યેય સાથે આ સંસ્થા આગળ ધપી રહેલ છે.  

 અહી આખા કપડવંજના બજાર તથા રહેણાંક વિસ્તારોમા રેલી દ્વારા મહિલા સશક્તિકરણના સ્લોગનો ઉચ્ચારીયા હતા અને સર્વેને મહિલા સાથે થતા અત્યાચારોને ઠામવા સાથ સહકાર સર્વે તરફથી મેળવવા રેલી સાથે આગળ વધી રહ્યા હતા. અંતે રેલી કપડવંજમાં આવેલ મામલતદાર કચેરીએ વિરામ લઇ મામલતદાર રાજશ્રીબેન ગઢવીને આવેદન પત્ર આપ્યું હતું. એકઠા થયેલ મહીલાઓની એક આશા છે કે તેમને સમાન હક અને પુરુષો દ્વારા થતી કનડગતો સામે રક્ષણ મળે.  

 રેલીની શરૂયાત પહેલા ડોન બોસ્કો કપડવંજમાં મહિલા દિન, મહિલા સન્માન દિવસની ઉજવણી પણ કરવામાં આવી હતી. આ ટાણે તેમની પ્રવૃતિનો અહેવાલ રજુ કરવામાં આવ્યો હતો. કપડવંજના અંતરાળ વિસ્તારમાંથી આવેલ બહેનો દ્વારા અહી સંસ્કૃતિક કાર્યક્રમો તથા મહિલા સશક્તીકરણનો સંદેશ આપતા શેરી નાટકો રજુ કર્યા હતા. 

 આ સુંદર કામ માટે અહીના ફા. આઇવન એસ. ડી. બી., ફા. મયંક એસ. ડી. બી. તથા કપડવંજ કમ્યુનિટીનો તથા હંમેશને માટે સાથ સહકાર આપતા કાર્યકરોનો ઉત્તમ ફાળો રહ્યો હતો .

140 Years Celebration at Makarpura-Baroda

140 YEARS OF LIFE OF THE INSTITUTE

“Hope for the World”. The Gujarat Region, 140th Anniversary elite celebration of the Foundation of our Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) found a niche in every heart in the campus of Auxilium-Baroda on 5th August 2012. The presence of 3 religious communities in Gujarat region brought together 450 youngsters, Members of the Educating Communities, Well Wishers, Benefactors, Parents, relatives and religious. The auspicious day commenced with a solemn thanksgiving Holy Eucharist con celebrated and led by Most Rev. Godfrey Rosario S.J Bishop of Baroda Diocese in procession with

dancing steps by Dakor girls to the Banqueting table. The festive liturgy and harmonious singing spread the fragrance of holiness all around. Bishop Godfrey Rosario in his well prepared sermon put across the message of the importance of Wisdom and Action practiced by Our Cofounders St. Mary Mazzarello. The works accomplished in the Gujarat region were acknowledged and appreciated. A meaningful reflection on the 140 th celebration - to move miles and miles, get back to our identity, recharge our batteries, animate our heart and communicate Jesus’ kingdom to generations were corresponded.

 The entire campus resonated with joy during the cultural programme. The releasing of 140 balloons marked the occasion in a very symbolic manner. The Animator of Baroda community Rev. Sr. Elizabeth Augustine warmly welcomed the audience of the day and the dignitaries were specially honored with floral tribute. An essence of 140 th Anniversary was delivered by Dakor Animator Sr. Rita Dora Thomas followed by opening chorus cum welcome by Dakor children. The professional dances by Auxilium Baroda depicted the

virtues and simple life style of St. Mary Mazzarello. A story of her short yet significant life was unfolded rendering the message of her loving kindness to the youth gone astray by Pansora girls.

 The presentation ‘A Dream Unfolds’ was viewed by all taking to heart the message of Mother Provincial Rev. Sr. Wilma D’souza and blessings to all the collaborators and recipients.

 The first booklet translated in Gujarati by Rev. Fr. Mayank Parmar SDB was released by Rev. Bishop Godfrey Rosario. Fr. Mayank while presenting his book unambiguously attributed the success to St. Mary Mazzarello. We express our gratitude to him in making known our foundress in a vernacular language to acquire holy vocations to our province. The History, Vocation and Mission of our Saint were beautifully displayed in the exhibition hall.

 The celebration culminated with delicious food for all the participants. Our hearts are filled with gratitude to God for the marvels he has worked through the instrumentality of our St. Mary Mazzarello. May the memories of the day vibrate with vigour and linger in the minds of everyone who were part of it.

 Don Bosco Kapadvanj witnessed its 5th Women’s Day on 20th March, 2012 coordinated by Dristi staff. 625 women were present for the grand event. The theme – ‘Bhanatar No Dayjo Dikrine Aapjo’ that emphasized the promotion of girls’ education was enacted by the Kheda District Primary Education Committee through a puppet show. The cultural programme was interspersed with a welcome song, garba, one act play, and a street play. The goal of the programme was to focus on the right of each and every woman. It was conducted to emphasize women empowerment and to conscientize the women of the villages of Kapadvanj bloc. In her speech, Mrs. Leelaben Ankolya, President of Gujarat State Women’s Commission urged the gathering to promote education of girls. She also invited each one to maintain hygiene in their homes and in their respected villages. Members of other NGOs were also present for this auspicious occasion. Charts depicting, ‘Women’s participation in Panchayat’, ‘Promotion of girls’ education’ and ‘Domestic Violence against women’ were exhibited in the Mission Mangalam stalls. Thanks to Fr. Kapadvanj Don Bosco Society offers a hopeful future for Youngsters Below the Poverty Line through the MORD Project
DB Tech is a network of 125 Don Bosco skill training centres spread across 25 states in the country making it the largest NGO engaged in livelihood training in India. All the centres provide employment-linked, market-oriented vocational training of short duration to the economically and socially marginalized youth. DB Tech has joined hands with the Ministry of Rural Development (MORD), Govt. of India, to impart vocational training to 40,000 youngsters over the next three years.

In July this year, Kapadvanj Don Bosco Society had started one domain under the DB Tech - MORD enterprise wherein it ran an IT Data Entry Course and Spoken English Course for the youth of Kapadvanj Taluka who are below the poverty line. Through this project we have recruited, skill-trained and placed these youngsters in a job to provide for their livelihood. The first batch had 27 students who successfully completed the three month training offered at the centre.

Today was an uplifting day as Kapadvanj Don Bosco Society had the inauguration of the second consecutive batch of students numbering 32, who have registered for this vocational training course. Present at this function was the MLA of Kapadvanj Constituency Mr. Manibhai Devjibhai Patel who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest; Mr. Khemchandani, DDM Nabard; Sr. Lavita D’souza, Director of the Social Projects at Pushpanjali Dakor; Fr. Mayank Parmar, Director Don Bosco Rural Integral Social Training Institute and Co-ordinator of MORD at Kapadvanj; Fr Isaac Arackaparambil, Director of Amrut Dhara: Don Bosco Animation Centre Kapadvanj; Social Staff together with the past and new batch of MORD Students with a few parents and other invited guests.

In his welcome address to the assembly, Fr. Isaac gave a gist of Don Bosco’s mission for the poor youth and emphasized that Kapadvanj Don Bosco Society not only skill trains the youngsters in particular trades, but also offers life skills for a healthy and holistic existence.

Mr. Kemchandani expressed that he considered poverty a more deadlier disease than cancer, and that the youngsters who were availing of the courses should use it as a stepping stone to alleviate their situation of poverty.


Mr. M.D. Patel in his speech said (Please Refer The Video)that while it is true that youngsters faced with poverty are economically backward, they should capitalize on the power of the mind. He also referred to people like Jamshedji Tata, Dhirubhai Ambani who in fact began very poor but made it big in life.
A few of the students of the first batch shared their success stories of how having been unemployed for a while after their schooling, they found their way in life by availing of the courses run by the MORD domain at Don Bosco Kapadvanj which trained and helped recruit them in companies.

Following this Mr. Patel, Mr. Kemchandani and Sr. Lavita distributed the certificates to the students of the first batch who had successfully completed the course, and Fr. Isaac with Mr. Sanjay and Sr. Lavita distributed the Identity Cards to the students of the new batch marking it as an official inaugural moment for the training ahead.
The students of the new batch put up a kawali song and a short skit on the evils of addiction under the coordination of Mr. Sanjay Parmar their trainer.

The function concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Fr. Mayank Parmar.

The Salesian sisters, in Dakor, Gujarat, are presently working among the most needy youth and children of the society. It is the Charism of the Father and Friend of the Youth, Don Bosco. Right from the opening of our Religious community, strengthenning of weak educational existence and social issues have been the top most priority in the field of activities. It is an enterprising venture, a challenging step and a planned activity towards growth promotion. In the recent past we the sisters have made endless efforts to study our localities and develop capacities of the most needy and provide basic requirements to build a better neighbourhood.

At the very outset charitable Institutions and local leaders extended support to cater to the health needs of women and children called the MCH Programme. Simultaneously drop out rate was on the rise too. hence a large number of youth and children were forced to hard labour with a very minimum and delayed payed wages by the haves. Remedial classes, called Evening tuition centres were opened basically to help children to acquire learning habits and cultivate a sense of purpose to a dignified living. With the opening of the typing classes for dropout youth and gradually through certificate computer cources and other allied trainings that a need for self-employment and to make a decent living, was created. Love, compassion and kindness are the key component of every activity. set times to share religious practices among those who want to attain fuller life and life in abundance has become a regular feature. we read reflect , share Gospel truths and help them comit eachother to good deeds. Presently we have signed a Programme agreement of DBTech, India called Bosco Academy for Skills and Employment, a skill building for BPL Candidate from the age group 18to35. With the completion of this 3 month classroom study and practicals that 116 number of youth are placed in long and short distant companies, hospitals and factories.

DRISTI stands with people

DRISTI stands neither behind nor in front but “With” the People

Taking a Right based Approach; Kapadvanj Don Bosco creates news by organizing the Morcha with regard to no payments for the four weeks of work under NREGA, comprising of 102 workers amounting to Rs. One and half lac.
On 2nd July 10, Fr. Mayank Parmar sdb, and DRISTI staff along with a tempo load of Rampura (Sorna) villagers go to a District Development Office and submits their memorandum saying “If we don’t get our payments in two days we are going to the labor court for the payments with compensation”.

After having a morcha on 14th June 10, we realized that most of all the villages’ payments were done immediately. Now fifteen days were over and we found out only one village was still to be paid and that is Rampura (Sorna) of Kapadvanj taluka. We, the DRISTI staff together with Fr. Mayank and Sailesh Parmar, Suresh Parmar addressed the people on 1st of July 10 in a public meeting in their own village. Villagers realized that was the only village in the whole of Kapadvanj taluka which was left without payments. So people got alarmed thinking if they don’t fight for their wages nobody is going to pay any attention and their hard labor will go in vain. They immediately form a union and decided to go to Nadiad to meet District Development Officer Ms. Manisha Chandra, on the following day we found forty people comprising of men and women got in to the Tempo with placards to the DDO’s office.

We wanted to meet Ms. Manisha Chandra the DDO of Kheda district. But she was busy with some other meeting so we met the Mr. Alpesh Chauhan P.A. of Ms. Chandra who also looks after the NREGA programme of the District. Mr. Chauhan addressed the people and told them that the action will be taken immediately without further delay.

True to his words, the team from the District and taluka came in the village that very evening. They studied the case and immediately sanctioned the money.

We were very much delighted to see all the people were in Chikloi post office to get their payments. People took a relief for having achieved the target of getting the money after having gone through the hard way.
