Sr. Flaviana A.C.
Born: 22.11.1928
Died:16.11.2014
You are my Lord, I have no God apart from you (Ps. 15: 2)
Sr. Flaviana nee Cecilia Dominica Aroja was born on 22nd November, 1928 in Mangalore to Mr. Lawrence Aroja and Mrs. Rosa Joseph. She was the 7th child of nine children of whom 6 survived. She was made much of by her family as she was the first girl after 5 boys.
Sr. Flaviana had a very happy childhood. She completed her primary studies in Holy Angels Convent and later in St. Ann School, Mangalore run by the Apostolic Carmel Sisters. She would often say that she got her vocation to religious life due to the strong faith and integrity of life of her pious parents. She learnt early in life to pray, converse with God and love our Blessed Virgin Mary all, taught to her by her parents. The challenges and the difficulties in her childhood made her strong to learn to adjust to her future life. She made a decision to follow her Lord and she never looked back. Her older brother Fr. Gratian who had join the seminary at Ajmer was her great support, confidante, and her guide.
Sr. Flaviana joined the Apostolic Carmel on 31st May 1949 and made her 1st profession on 22nd May, 1952 as a religious sister. She did all that was entrusted to her to the best of her ability. She has rendered loving and dedicated services as a teacher and superior in our convents in Calicut, Mangalore, Pune, Goa, Delhi and Gujarat. I must say that Sr. Flaviana has selflessly toiled in Gujarat Mount Carmel Navrangpura, Jivan Sarita Ashram Mehsana and Carmel Cote for 39 years. She has spent more than half of her religious life in this land of Gujarat. To many, she came across as a very serene, calm, understanding, supportive and a loving person. Through her life, she has drawn many Gujarati young girls to the Lord, to follow their vocation to the religious life. Her unassuming ways and her appreciative nature made the sisters very comfortable in her presence and in the community. She had a soft corner for the needy and always reached out to them. Sr. Flaviana has also served in NBCLC in Bangalore for 5 years as treasurer and as an office administrator. She has also been the provincial treasurer for 6 years in our Province.
As a teacher she was very effective where she connected the subjects with values. Her students still remember the value education lessons she would conduct. She made them very interesting and enriching, always keeping God at the center.
Sr. Flaviana has bravely faced all trials, difficulties and illnesses with great courage and faith in God. Her source of strength was the Lord in the Eucharist. She spent hours at times when the winds were disturbing and rough. She held on to the anchor of her faith, Jesus.
Her end came rather unexpectedly. A fall on 19th September left her incapacitated. She was operated upon the following day at Uma hospital Naroda by Dr. Nalin Patel. She suffered tremendously. Every moment was a torture, yet not a complaint escaped her lips. She would express her gratitude to her and all those who visited her and for little things done to her.
For the past few days her sufferings had reached its peak. God in His mercy has accepted her sacrifice and taken her to Himself.
We are grateful to Bishop Thomas Macwan, Arch bishop Stanislaus, our parish fathers, and all the fathers and the sisters, dear ones of Sr. Flaviana, specially her dear brother Fr. Gratian of Indore Diocese, who was very much concerned about her well being and the friends who paid kind visits to her.
While we mourn her death, we are grateful and feel privileged to have had her in our community. May she intercede for us, her dear ones, our parish, the Congregation and specially the people of Gujarat whom she loved so much. May she rest in the arms of Jesus eternally.
